Two deceptive eBay 300D's, STAY AWAY!

I have driven both of these vehicles and I was VERY disappointed at how misrepresented they are in the ads. they will go for a lot more money than they are worth. please spread the word if you can.

This is the first. the red one. It is pretty, but he doesn't show the severely corroded chrome wheel, the cracked and faded roof, the non working door locks, several interior peices that are broken.

the car IS fast, but he had it 'tricked out' by a local shop. there is a SEVERE shaking at under 30mph of the whole car and steering wheel. it's not nearly as pretty as the pictures present it to be.

the second, same seller.

what a peach. it really is a nice car, but it has been repainted, and not so wheel. wheels have been repainted as well. i do believe it is probably original mileage. there is fading on the roof which was not repainted. the biggest thing i noticed about the car more than anything else was how much it had NO power. the solenoid kick down switch didn't work. it was VERY sluggish and had no pep. didn't feel like the turbo was working either. in the ad he did say he recently had a $450 service, so maybe he fixed it. also the seats DO lean and are a little saggy. otherwise the car starts RIGHT up and is quiet and solid.

either way, i don't trust this guy at all.

beware and warn others if you can

eric

Thanks for the information Peyton. Interesting how many people are bidding on these cars isn't it.

Looks like neither will meet reserve anyway, his pictures won't even load anymore. The guy sounds like quite the exaggerater.

***** THIS IS THE FASTEST 300D TURBO DIESEL I HAVE EVER DRIVEN IN MY LIFE ( AND I DROVE A LOT) ***** IT PULLS LIKE A STRAIGHT 6 CYLINDER (MAYBE EVEN FASTER). THE TRANSMISSION ALSO SHIFTS THE BEST ALSO. I RECENTLY SPENT SOME MONEY ON SERVICING IT. THE BRAKES WERE ALSO RECENTLY DONE -PROBABLY LESS THAN 200 MILES ON THEM!!

OVERALL THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS CAR. I DON'T THINK YOU CAN FIND ANY 1985 MERCEDES 300D TURBO DIESEL IN THIS LIKE NEW CONDITION.
Thanks for the heads up Eric.

Quoted from the above auctions:

However, with all pre-owned automobiles, the condition is subjective; so the bidder is welcome to fly out to inspect as well as test drive the vehicle before bidding.
I guess in his mind that says it all, if you bid without flying out there first, it's not his fault.

It never ceases to amaze me when people buy a used car sight unseen. I've made offers on them, conditional on my approval of the vehicle when I go to see/drive/pick it up. But I'd never have an unseen car delivered. That goes for new cars as well.

While I have a 100% positive feedback of around 80 if I bought a car and found out it was misrepresented I'd just fly back home. Sure my feedback is worth something, but my money is worth more. Also if he mislead it then the ball would go back in his court to pay for my ticket back or get negative for his misrepresentation. In my future eBay purchases I think I'll fly down the next day or two after so they won't even have my deposit.

I don't know why you wouldn't buy new unseen, as long as it wasn't a pep car or damaged at one point in time. I'd refuse to pay the whole thing before picking it up though.

By nature I am a distrustfull person. The last new vehicle I bought was a 2002 Chevy Astro Van. New off the lot. Although it was last years model.

The AC didn't work. It was just a loose connector on the compressor. However, since I discovered it before I had intended to pick it up they fixed it before I took the van.

I have a hard enough time trying to make up my mind to buy a car I can see, never mind can't see.

The sellers fill the whole spectrum, you just have to be careful and trust, but verify.

I have bought 4 cars through ebay and 3 of the 4 sellers provided the option to cancel the transaction upon inspection. If they are not willing to do this I won’t bid or buy.
Speak with the seller and prearranged the inspection conditions.

Well worst case scenario there would have been you'd take it to a chevy dealer somewhere along the way or when you got home.

Myself I almost plan what vehicle I want to get, what options, what color, I research into it well before buying. I started reading about my Talon when I was 16 and finally bought one at 18. I researched my 84 300D for about 3 months before buying it (was rushing for a daily driver). I've spent the last quite a few months getting familiar with the VW Jetta IV and Dodge Ram CTDs in hopes of buying one in the next year or so. Big investment and I want to know what to look for or the advantages of getting certain years.

That is only reasonable, a dealer who really trusts thier listings will promise to pay your airfare home if not as listed.
