Over the years, I've had three 240D's. Out of the three, I've had two of them that would leak water into either of the rear floorboards during a rainstorm. Sometimes it can rain hard and there will be no water, other times a light shower will fill the rear floorboard.

One of the leakers had a sunroof, the other did not. But, I really don't believe the sunroof has anything to do with it. I have checked to make sure the drains are clear along the framerails and in the trunk. I've dealt with this problem for years and have never figured it out.

We had a rainstorm and I got a little water this time, so I remembered to post this question. I've gone all these years without a forum like MercedesShop to ask.

Has anyone experienced this problem? Any ideas?

In my experience, leaks of this nature (onto the floors) are almost always from the windshield or rear window weatherstrips. Sometimes the leak is between the glass and the seal and moisture can be seen tracking across the seal at the bottom, particularly at the corners. Other times, the leak is between the body flange and the seal and can't be seen as easily. I believe 3M and Wurth make a sealant that can be gunned into the areas described. If that doesn't work a new seal is called for. I've seen this on almost all M/B chassis with rubber window seals.

Most likely the water is leaking trough the firewall. If the draining under the battery is plugged the firewall will rust. Water enters trough the firewall and runs over the floor to the rear (lower).
If the hole is on the right side and you park with the right side higher it will not leak, even in heavy rain.

I had wet floor in my 450 SEL. After a lot of detective work I found seals on both the windshield and rear window were leaking.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to check the rear window seal. Thanks for advice Rob, and I will check below the battery, but I'm in Texas, my cars have ZERO rust. I realize that the rust you're speaking of is caused by the battery, but I just changed engines and cleaned up everything in the engine compartment including replacing the battery tray, there was no rust anywhere behing or below it.

Thanks again

I had a '79 240D that leaked water into the rear floor area. It was coming from the two wells under the hood that the hood-hinges fold into. Try cleaning the water drains on both sides...mine were filled with leaf debris that eventually clogged the drain tubes. I used a bent wire clothes hanger and other various "tools" to work the clumps free.

Ron,

Thanks, this is an area I haven't checked. I cleaned up the engine compartment, but didn't check any drains in the engine compartment.

Can't wait to take a look.

Larry,
My BMW 2002 did the same thing, and the problem was the rear window seal. The water leaks in past the seal, runs down the rear shelf under the trim panel, down behind the rear seat cushions, and ends up in the floor boards. You'd be amazed at how fast standing water will rust even a Texas or California car. If it is leaking, the right way to fix it is to remove the window and replace the seal, as the body flange into which the seal fits might have rusted as a result of the leakage, and you'll want to get to this area and clean it up to prevent further rust. Just my $0.02 worth.

Thanks Rob, on my 260E the water appears in the driver foot well and emerges just by the foot rest - next to transmission tunnel. The water only appears when I spray water onto the roof, so I assume its coming in via the sunshine roof. Any suggestion how to clear.

Many thanks , getting fed-up wearing the wellies.

I have rust on the underside of the body of my SEC just below the rear window. There's also some delamination at the bottom corners of the rear window so I'm pretty sure that's where at least some of the water is coming in. How effective is just trying to fix this with some silicone or other type of caulking?

I suspect I may also have a leak under the passenger side hood hinge.

I just thought I would revive this thread since it's pretty old and I know this is a common problem for these cars.

Hey Tom,

After seeing your car, I'd say you should try to clean all the collected dirt from under the rear window seal and make sure you don't see any rust under there. Then you could use butyl rubber sealant and run a bead under the seal all the way around the window.

DON'T USE SILICONE!!! It will cause rust by trapping corrosive moisture as it cures. It contains acetic acid (vinegar).

Okay. Thanks, Chad. I'll give that a try. I also have to inspect that area beneath the battery. If I could stop these leaks without removing any glass, I'd be a happy guy.

I think I knew silicone was not good, but couldn't remember why.

A good way to clean out drains

For cleaning the drains under the hood hinges:

Get a piece of steel cable at a hardware store about 1/8 inch across and about 40 inches long.

Get some plastic caps to superglue over each end to keep the cable from fraying.

Keep punching it down the drain hole until you break through.

These fill with leaves and dirt and must be cleaned now and then. The bad part is that they are hard to see unless you know just where to look.

I saw what looked like a very small plumber's snake at Harbor Freight once, too. It was small enough to fit into those drain tubes.

I think JIMMYL did a thread on cleaning the sun roof drains with a plumbers snake.

Be sure to check under the front wheel wells where the plastic splash guard fastens to the body under the hood hinge drains. there is a tube molded into the plastic that is closed off on the end. take a knife and cut out the end so it will drain. debris builds up behind it.

If you decide to remove it, check the end of the rocker and the wall, I found rust starting on mine.
