I was thinking about what it would look like to spray the grille insert black, and do the transparent hobby paint thing to the fog lamps. Subtle, but different. Grille's getting kind of brittle and ratty.

i like it tinted...

but i do not like black

it is so off the shelf...with so many great metallics in grey available in a spray can, i would find a color to work with the orange and yellows in your lighting, and to accent the natural grey insert in your head lamps...

look for grey with a hint of amber in it...

when i revamped mine i painted the grill a dark metallic grey, then a good clear coat...

painted an extra set of eurolamps the same color (insert) and didnt like that (looked like big bug eyes in silver flanked by the dark grey housings, YUK), so i painted the original euros silver metallic...and i like that more...holds the theme into the clear turns... works off of the chrome well..i also "rebuilt" the headlamps - wow what a difference!

cool to see something done!
Jake

also i would be leary of the hobby paints in the real world...uv and heat killers (fades, crackes, dulling -BLAH!)...ppg, house of kolor, dupont - special t tints; all make clear coat additives that can tint to anything you want, that is the real and only choice for an automobile...ask your local jobber

In my humble opinion. . .

The black is to strong, and draws to much attention. And I agree with BF_JC230, i would spray it some gray/metalic color.

I'd leave the fog lamps as they are.

"this" looks much better. Whatever your wife likes is what is "this", LOL.

As a classic, I prefer it in it's OEM form - just my $0.02.

I like the OEM look. But, you do what you want. In my opinion, a grille painted black looks best on darker color W126 sedans.

If you had euro lights the black grill could work, the OEM looks better with the US light "doors", they form a nice line.

Haha, you couldn't have been more right, on both counts.

I'd spray it grey if the original plastic is looking worn. There are some nice semi-matt grey metallic paints that would match OEM fairly well.

I really like my black grille insert and think it looks nice versus the high mileage badge. I am starting to realize the bumper paint I used on it isn't lasting though. I'll start a new thread soon on this subject.

Alright, I'm going to go against the grain and admit I like the black grill better.

Looks the way a grill "should" look. The grey "looks" like plastic and fades and stains and looks awful when it gets 20 years old.

Am thinking I'll do mine black too, a matte or satin.

Then again, I might do what all these other blokes are saying (sort of) and fine a little darker grey matte paint for it (it was originally darker than most are now with 20 years of sunlight and fading and bugs and dings on them.)
