Leaking brake fluid reservoir
I bought a "Power Bleeder" to flush my brake system, it tells you to put some presure on the system before bleeding to spot leaks. Sure I have some leaks; fluid is coming out of the two black knops on top of the reservoir (see picture), is this normal or do I have to replace the reservoir?

I have a pressure bleeder and have never had the low level light sensors leak while the system is pressurized. Don't use more than 20psi to pressurize the system.
You may have to replace the reservoir. Dave |

Its common for those to leak when you use your pressure bleeder for the first time. Those rubber "caps" are available at the dealer or Fastlane. Pry the old ones off and replace them. |
I'm glad to hear that, up to the dealer tomorrow morning. Thanks

Mine seem to leak when you press on
them. Some time ago I was trying to sort out the vac system and I was leaning on them with my arm. They started to leak brake fluid. Is this the way it should be or do I need to replace the rubber caps? Thanks for any info. Louis. |
Just came back from the Dealer; I'm always amazed what they have in stock, but there prizes: $21,95 for 4 rubbers!
I had set my mind on doing it this weekend, otherwise I would have called Fastlane. I'm going to take the reservoir of the master cylinder to replace the seals and to clean the reservoir, what's best and save to use; mineral spirit? |
Glad those rubbers where leaking, the reservoir is full with smudge, and all the rubbers where cracking

"what's best and save to use;" I use soap and hot water to clean them out. Steve |
That's what I did, I left it soaking for an hour in warm water with some dish soap but still there was some "smudge" left in the little chamber that I could not get rid off. The reservoir was really dirty, the complete inside bottom was black!
The weird thing was that the fluid in the reservoir was dark brown almost black, the fluid that came out of the right rear had brownish tone with almost no smudge, but all the other lines the fluid that came out was yellow and clear. After I reinstalled the reservoir I topped it of with new brake fluid. Now another question; I used two liters of DOT-4, but when I cleaned the fill cap, it shows on top: "Use only DOT-3", did I use the wrong grade? |

Dot 4s the right stuff. Good to get all that nasty crap out of the system. Steve |
