need the right diesel for the job or will the old girl do it

My commute is 80 miles each way in traffic that can go from 5-85 mph in every concievable weather condition on flats and hills Im wondering if this would be ok for my beloved 240d to handle, or go with a 5 cyl model. ( my current 300sd is being used by someone else so its out)

It will be a nicer ride at 85 with the 5 cylinder.

go for it, I did that for a while with a 115 240D, got 31 mpg (4-spd) over a 160 mile/day commute.
I used to be in2nd for merging on steep on-ramps (I live in Colorado at 7000 ft) and cruise at 65 mph the full way and 70 - 80 on flats and downhills. NO PROBLEMO

240D will do it but...

My 240D will do it but as engatwork says the 5 cyl makes it much easier on the driver. I have driven my SD enough now to appreciate the 80 mph difference, NOISE.

If you have a good stereo in the 240D, turn it up and enjoy winding it out! Mine always purrs like a kitten after a good trip at speed.

Caution:

Check your oil cooler lines and radiator hoses carefully, before you begin running it that hard.
You don't want to be stranded with a dead engine.

Lightbulb Another thought

Just in case you haven't checked them lately, give a look at your flex disks. If you have one turn loose, especially at speed, MANY things can and will go wrong.

guys, CHILL !!
yes, flex discs can cause a holocaust, but more often than not, they will manifest themselves as a vibration then a shuddering, finally shredding themselves , not a cataclysmic upheaveal by ANY means.

Good ideas by amny means !!

go for it

Cool I'm cool!

I guess I'm just a little paranoid when it comes to the 240D at speed. I don't mind driving mine at 80 for extended periods but just want everyone who may choose to follow that path to do so with confidence.

I did that for a while with my 240D (1980) and it was great. But I never forget the words an experienced mechanic once passed on to me- "I would never drive a car that old that fast." On reflection, I conclude this aphorism applies to all cars of any age.

As with people, it's that last 5% that kills you.

One out of 5 drivers on the road is at the wrong end of the 80-20 rule, and they're probably the ones passing you.

nymike93,

Not only a 5 cylinder but a turbo 5 or turbo 6.
