well it has been nice but I turned in my keys and own a bmw.

Hello all,

It has been great over the years sharing my wisdom and frustration with all of you. Owning mercedes has been a joy and with all of your help and guidance alot easier and cheaper experience. Now I sold the 87 300d (It is not final but I have a commited party) and the new 87 bmw 325i in the driveway it is time to methodically destroy and dismantle another perfectly good german automobile. I hope the bmw are as good as mb are. I can tell you that parts are going to be alot cheaper. There are a lot of bmw e30 cars out there. I bought a 87 325i with 180K on it. It was meticulusly owned and maintianed. It needs nothing , but that wont stop me. I will probably have hundreds of dollars of damage to the car even before it is registered. I will miss the advice and support that I got here. I dont think that the bmw forums are as good or the people as helpful....well at least thats what I will tell you guys..

All kidding aside I will miss the forum and would like to wish that all the turns of your wrenches are not met with striped threads.

thank you all

bob c.

Congratulations!

I love the E30 and I want one for myself, namely the 325iX Coupe - classic good looks and 4WD for the winter times. What a winner I'd say... just can't find a good one yet...

So Far it seems that parts will be cheaper for my 325 than my 87 300d.

My w124 does not have cheap parts. exspecially the 0m603.

From what I can see they will be cheaper due the the mass quanity of e30s out there. a fan clutch on the the mb is at wholesale price 170 bucks. I saw them redily avialable on ebay for 50 for the bmw. THe shocks for the car will be 230 for the bmw compaired with 360 for the MB (bilstiens).

Now the e30 parts seem to be alot cheaper than the other bmw models. If it was the 95 740 that i have been lusting after I would not say this.

I am lucky that I have a brother that works at a dealer and a mechanic friend who can get great prices.

I can say the w123 prices on there parts are not high and I hope that the bmw e30 have simular prices.

I can say one thing about the bmw. It is a pretty quick little car. It pulls in any gear at any speed. I cant wait to see how it rolls out on the highway.

thanks

That straight six in the 325 is a good engine. Parts for a 325 are a little higher than a 123 chassis but less than an 87 300D. And yes the 740 series parts are outrageous.

That M20 engine likes to rev, make sure timing belt is changed per schedule (60K miles) and cooling system is well sorted out. Don't ever overheat the engine. However, it is quite easy to swap in a new head on a M20 comparing to the newer dual cam Vanos engine.

You will find that BMW mechanical stuff is of lighter duty than MB in general.

Now here's the next step to screwing up your perfectly good Bimmer...find a crashed mid-'80s BMW 524td, with the superb 2.4L 125-hp turbodiesel straight-six, and drop it in where your perfectly fine gasser six is now. Crank up the boost, put in some propane injection and bigger diesel injectors, get a performance rebuild on the injection pump, and, with the light E30 chassis and a 5-speed stick, you will be seriously flying, while getting 45 mpg.

Well, that might be a little insane, but seriously, if your gasser motor ever develops an expensive problem, seriously consider a diesel swap. You could do it cheap, and it would be really cool. I have heard of people doing this one, the 2.4TD into the manual-trans E30, and it is supposed to be easy and have great results. Like all good things, it was available stock in Europe.

If I ever have the dough, that's what I'm doing--but into a 325IX. I found a '90 red 4-door for sale for parts on ebay a few months ago. It had low miles, and the engine had thrown a rod. Went for less than $2k. Perfect. Grrr.......
