Nubie Q: Can gasser jump a diesel?

Was just wondering if a regular gas car can jumpstart a diesel car? Was thinking about the higher compression of a diesel, bigger battery, etc., and what I might do if I ever need a jumpstart somewhere. Thx! :)

Yes they can, but it takes a while, i've had mine jumped this way many times

It all depends!

I guess if it had a running start it might be able to jump a diesel.:D I know, always a smarty around.

I jumped my 300D with a Hyundai Excel.. You just need to let it charge the battery for 5-10 minutes.

I used a portable jump box (basically a motorcycle battery) on my 300D that was sitting for 5 months and it started right up after only about 5 seconds cranking. If the boosting battery and the jumper cables are good there should be no need to let it charge the battery for 5-10 minutes.

Yes.. but the battery in my Hyundia put out maybe 300 cranking amps.. wouldn't even turn the motor over.

Roughly

Fifteen years ago:
I used my Honda 350 motorcycle to jump start a Mercedes Benz diesel.
#1. Connect cables.
#2. Raise the RPM to 1200.
#3. Relax for 3/4 hour.
#4. Disconnect jumper cables.
#5. Start car.

As I recall, the Honda 350 motorcycle only puts out 15 AMP, which takes a long time to charge a large battery.
I disconnect the cables before starting because it acts like a dead short across the weaker system, and can fry the alternator.

I these cases, technically, you are not really "jump starting" the car, you're just charging the dead battery.

I charged the batteries in an International cabover, with a big Detroit Diesel engine with my 1981 300 SD. It took about 30 minutes.

I jumped a my freightliner with a VW rabbit diesel one time. it took a few hours to get enough juice to crank it.

I've jumped the SDL a couple of times with the S420 and a couple other times with the Caravan. I mean connect the cables and start, not charging the weak battery. The SDL battery was to the point that it wouldn't turn the cold (70F ambient) engine with the glow plug relay disconnected. Connect, glow, start. Simple as that.

Most batteries in gas-powered cars don't have

enough amps to directly "jump" a diesel in the conventional sense...however, getting juice into a proper "diesel-caliber" battery may make it able to start with the proper amp level needed.

Have tried to start my 240 with a conventional "jump" from a service truck and two different "jump boxes"...none of them even cranked over the diesel, altho the glow plug indicator functioned normally.

I've jump started my Peugeot diesel using two gassers.

Using a diesel to jump start a gasser is a different story:rolleyes:

i used to have a ford Bronco, and i used it many times to jump large construction equipment (usually having 2 giant batteries) w/ no problem, and no charging time. usually you only need a little help, the battery usually has some juice in it.

I jump started an English car with an Italian car once. Both had the batteries in the rear so it was boot to trunk.

Talk about the blind leading the lame...
