Thanks bruce

Thanks
Bruce Bonds I have been looking for just such a place. So I could put euro plates under my C.A. plates hoping it would stop some alert PD officer from stopping me because my car slipped through without being fully DOT complianate.

DDH, you are absolutely right. When I was a cop in Hampton, Virginia ten years ago, all but 18 states issued 2 tags per car, making it illegal to drive w/o two matching plates. This was helpful to law enforcement in catching car thieves and other law breakers because, if a car had no front tag, the officer had instant probable cause to stop the car and check license and registration. Two stops I remember vividly were a Mazda RX-7 owned by my patrol sergeant's daughter (oops), and a Vette owned by the coach of the highschool state championship football team ("do you know who I am?"). Neither owner wanted to ruin the streamlined looks of the car's front-end with a tag. Oh well.

This was all before the camera enforcement in the US.

However, Georgia only issues one tag per car, so I guess I can do what I want with the front.

Mattdave, I looked into shipping my 220D to the states in 1979. The requirements to "convert to US specs" were so complicated and ambiguous that I gave up and sold the car to my landlord. Then, there was the DOT threat of impoundment at the US port if I didn't do it right.

"braindead cheats and scum place them on their cars, especially the shiny MB Star, etc."

So I'm a braindead cheat for trying to fool around a little and put a cool looking plate on my car. I don't like being called names so I sudjest if this bothers you, (I don't understand why) you stop posting in my thread. Because I will do whatever I want to my car to make it look better (at least to me) and if you don't like it well thats your problem. I have gotten many positive remarks on how nice my car looks by people I respect.

Koop, think about it. This happened too many times. A guy steals a car in a two tag state and drives it around for a few days then parks it. His chances of getting stopped are lower if he gets rid of the tags and slaps on a tag he steals from another car. Front tags were stolen more often because folks don't miss them as soon. The "hot-sheets" we got daily, had yr, make, model, and tag#. Many cops only saw the rear tag and, if the tag wasn't on the "hot sheet", they didn't make the stop. Personally, if everything else matched the hot sheet, I would "run" the tag and see if it "came back" to that car. Also, if I noticed that a car had no front tag, I would stop the car and find out why.

Back in the day, when I was driving truck I had a "novelty" plate that had "if you can read this MOVE OVER" written backwards on the grill of a Freightliner...it worked sometimes....got it at a truck stop I'm sure.

No name calling from me, I would love to have a chrome MB "star" for a front plate. Texas issues 2 plates tho and you had better have them both...I drove a 71 coupe de ville for 3 months with no bumper or grill...no problem...put a new bumper on and within 2 days I got stopped for not having a front plate. As of this year we can not even use a "frame" that blocks ANY of the writing... and if I understand correctly ...no clear covers either.

No name calling from me either. I am going to get a used or replica German tag for the front. Thanks to Hatterasguy for the idea. By the way, my county is starting to initiate the camera at the red light method of enforcement. I guess they will photograph the rear tags since that's all we are required to have.

European Plates

Now that I think about it Milford is starting to crack down on the two plate thing. Maybe if I get a euro plate with the same numbers as my rear plate the cops won't bother me.

I've driven cars with a front Euro plates for years in my 2 tag state without getting stopped. Most cops are car people too and unless you are doing something stupid or they are having a bad day, they won't bother you for Euro tag. A few months ago I got a matching pair of Italian Euros for my Alfa and just stuck my real tag in the back window and havn't been pulled over (yet) but then, I've never had a cop behind me yet either.

P.S. The modern looking plates with the blue bar didn't become standard until 1994 so the all white one is right for an '87 but I think for my '87 above with the moden W124 bodystyle the current style looks best. As for getting one personalized, not unless the car is all pimped out. I think an original random number tag looks best on a stock vehicle. As for printing "Move Over" backwards on a plate, that may look rather tacky and probably impossible without making custom reverse letters to stamp out the plate with. If you must do that, why not go to a sign printing shop and have them make up a windsheild decal like that for only $20-30.
