84 SD Transmission leak???

Hi Guys,
I've searched around but can't find anyone who mentioned the same thing I am experiencing...

I have sealed up all the leaks on the 84 until this weekend I noticed a small puddle under the car right in the center of the frame crossmember (directly under the torque converter).
It turns out as near as I can tell to be transmission fluid. About 4 drops over night.

Anyway, I have to replace the brake support bushings so thought I'd tackle this at the same time since I'll have to pull the crossmember anyway, but has anyone had this problem and found what was leaking? I'm thinking (really lucky) it might just be the torque converter drain plug is a little loose or what else could it be? I'm praying we are not talking front seal or anything major!

Thanks for your insights...

Good luck with it being the TC drain plug. Worst case will be the front tranny seal. If it is go ahead and pull the complete tranny and have the whole thing re-sealed.

Front seal

I am assuming that this is not really a DIY kind of thing?

Can you just do the front seal without taking the whole tranny assembly apart?

You can do the front seal without taking the tranny apart.

Pretty straight forward if you are the type of diy'er that can handle a transmission hanging out the bottom of the car you should be fine. Everything is pretty straight forward but it can and does get physical at times especially if you don't have a lift.

If you pull the tranny (which you will have to do) reseal the whole thing. This will insure you don't have any leaks for awhile.

Jacks and jacks

I've got jacks up the wazoo and can rig almost any kind of setup needed to do a lifting job.

I'm going to dig into it after I get back from Chicago next week and I'll let you know what I find.

Think positive thoughts.... aaaahhhhooooommmmm
TC plug is just a hair loose I'm sure...

I resealed the tranny on my 86 SE while it was out I also replaced the tranny mount and flex disks. It probably would have been smart to replace the rear main seal while I had it out but didn't

Fisherman:

I had a similar small leak in a 1987 300D. My friend owns a tranny shop and he added some sort of stuff that swells the seals and it hasn't leaked in the last 15K miles, runs great.
