Question Improved 300 turbo cylinder head - when ???

Gsxr told us that later cylinder heads don't crack. He said that a quick look under the number two injector will tell you the casting number that's good, or bad. See here for more info.

But when did Benz start putting the better heads in W124 turbos?

I just found a 1994 300TD turbo in Germany with only 10,000 miles on the clock. But I found it thru a wholesaler friend, so I can't go look at it before I steal ... uh, buy it.

So does anybody know what MY has the better cylinder heads?

BTW, here in Yurrup, where we are all so sophisticated and smug, Benz offered a diesel in the W124 that makes 136 HP. It also was offered in the W210 until the current CDI line phased in. Could that be the 5cyl 2.5L turbo?

GSXR, was reffering to the OM603 which was introduced only one prodution year (1987) here in the US, in 300DT and 300SDL.

The aluminum heads these early 603's had, at least in this country, had some design flaws that were later addressed. In which year, I do not know as MB redesigned another diesel for US production, a five cylinder for 1990, or was it 91. I dont think there was a problem for the these five cylinder engines, never heard of any!

Talking

Sooty, if I read you correctly, any W124 6cyl turbo after 1988 or so probably has the newer head?

Hoping to find out more ... Reno

PS: For that tail light, try putting in raw rice with dish detergent and hot water. I once owned a Volvo 740TD that I nicknamed Pepe le Pewe, due to its omnipresent cloud of stinky soot. I would clean out Pepe's tail light every year or so with my rice trick. Worked great!
