Ignition lock

My key is starting to become very hard to turn. I assume this means the ignition lock is about to take a plunge. I'd like some advise other than lube it which does not seem to help. I'm pretty sure the only way to remove it is to remove the dash again and then if I replace, how do I get the cylinder which will match my key?

Thanks for any help,

Mike

You can remove the cylinder from your ignition without removing the dash.

- Take a 1.3mm hex wrench, turn key to position 1 (first detent) insert wrench into the whole and wiggle the key till the wrench goes all the way in.
- You'll then be able to remove the collar and cylinder from the ignition.
- Try operating the cylinder outside of the ignition to make sure thats really where the problems lies.

I'm in the process of writing a very detailed DIY document about the ignition assembly for the 123 cars. I had a problem with my ignition working but not starting the car, and it turned out to be a failure in the ignition assembly.

If the cylinder is the problem you can order a matching one from the dealer. They'll need your VIN# and it will cost from $90-$100.

Be aware that they will require proof of ownership of the car. So you have to physically go there and show them your driver's license and registration. This is to prevent any schmoe from off the street reading your VIN through the window and ordering up a key. Mine was $109 for a new tumbler and key one year ago.

Actually you can buy them cheaper from a place in Atlanta called BuyMBparts. All you have to do is fax them a copy of your drivers license & registration. They will ship the key directly to you. The number is 800-741-5252.
