I am dieseling now

I just joined the diesel club. This is my first diesel.
I just picked up my 99 E300DT from MB dealer. The car is not starmarked because they will not starmark a car beyond 80 Kmi. I have to read the manual it has few new buttons I am not familair with.
Details: 99 E300DT silver with grey tex interior, 91 Kmi, CD changer, heated orthopedic seats (all sorts of air operated softness control). Carfax showed one owner lease car. I do not know if being a lease car is a good or bad thing, on the positive side it had all regular servicing. Pictures to follow.
Anything I should do besides oil change?

Coolant change if you don't have records showing it done in the past 2 years. Brake fluid change while you're at it.

The interior on the 99 is a mix of Tex and leather. The side bolsters are Tex, while the perforated center sections are leather. Full leather was available as an option.

Congratulations!

Thumbs up

Why it wouldn't hurt to do a transmission fluide change too and you may want to consider using synthetic trans fluide. there have been several post here on the diesel forum lately about synthetics being used in our MBs.

Sounds like a nice ride...........

Do LOTS and LOTS of research before messing with a 722.6 transmission, or advising anyone else to mess with one. Plenty of information is on this board, but you'll have to search for it.

Have you heard something about synthetic in the transmissions you mentioned being questionable for use?

There do seem to be many opinions as to their use in a variety of MB transmissions.

The only synthetic I'm currently using is in my differential, and I'm using synthetic gear lube produced by Mobile One.

Synthetic is required. And not just any synthetic, but the one from the MB dealer. Changing the fluid also requires a special tool that measures both fluid level and temperature and must be purchased from the dealer. The car does not come with a dipstick, and measuring the fuid at the proper temperature is critical.

Changing the fluid on this beast is something I would not do myself, so I had the dealer do it. The transmission ended up being rebuilt less than 5,000 miles later. Whether due to the fluid change or not, I cannot say. But they are mighty expensive and I wouldn't tinker with one.

Come to think of it, yes I remember reading about no dipstick!

I guess the "Old School" of transmission maint. does no longer apply with the newer MBs!

What frequency does MB recommend for fluide change on these newer rigs?

MB says "sealed for life." I suppose everyone can decide on their own definition of life, but for MB these days it seems to be "until the warranty runs out." After that they flatly refuse to help with anything. Opinions are all over the map on when to change the transmission fluid, and it is not cheap at around $200. I had mine changed at 75K, and a new transmission at 80K. Some people say 100K or 150K on the fluid. Then again, there are some 722.6 trannys out there with over 300K on the original fluid. Mine is staying as is unless it starts acting funny.

WoW!

Time and milage will tell!

Guess I'll stick with my 124 until the jury is out in a couple of years!

I have planed however to purchase a 95 E300D in the near future, but more recently I've questioned why I would need to since my current 87 may out-live me and it is in near top shape!

Do the 95 transmissions share the same maint-free as with the newer?

No, the switch to the 722.6 5 speed was in 1997. We've talked enough about transmissions on Rafi's thread. Like I said above, all the information is here if you search for it. Just look for "722.6."

congrats

Many congrats on the purchase of a solid turbodiesel. Take good care of her. Don't forget to check the water in the battery. It's under the backseat ! Good luck.

Nice car RAFI I like the lt.silver blue. The trunk lid with E300 badge on drivers side, and on the passengers side it looks like it reads, Turbo Diesel?

You must ingnor my ignorance for any MB diesel built after 95. I have not payed much attention until now and I'm slowly getting educated. I have not run across any 210 diesels and see only a 124 diesel once in a while, but do see many 123 diesel's and Lots of gassers.

originally posted diesel purge here, wrong post, edited out.

There's a bluish tint to those pictures, but the car is brilliant silver. It also has the add-on chrome headlight rings. I've got those as well, so mine looks exactly like Rafi's.

Yes, the left side says "E300" and the right side says "TURBODIESEL."
