Alchohol as a fuel in Mercedes diesel engines

Quote:
A universal Mercedes diesel-the six-cylinder Type 352-serves as a "test bed" for Brazilian alternative fuel research. This engine operates on diesel fuel, a mixture of diesel fuel and gasoline, or a blend of diesel fuel and vegetable oil. With minor adjustments, it burns alcohol, too! >>

BRAZIL'S ALCOHOL DIESELS at motherearthnews.com

We have discussed alternative fuels such as Biodiesel, Vegetable oil and Waste Motor oil, here is an article about burning alchohol in diesel engines.

Note that this article is from 1980.

This is no different than what some overseas do when blending European White Spirits with WVO/SVO. It reduces viscosity and like gasoline mixtures it may as well provide a second flame front to ensure total burn of the oil based fuel.

Problem now though is blends that contain an alcohol; such as methanol, means they contain a solvent than can react with coatings on sensor that the computer relies on for input. This breakdown of sensor coatings could causes strange input and poor performance

It would take god-almightly hard plunger/sleeve sets to run at 2500 psi with no lubrication ---- to say nothing of the water corrosion from the residual water in the alcohol.

Bad milage, too.

I don't expect to see alcohol diesels any time soon -- veggie oil and derivatives work too much better.

Rather interesting article. Lubrication was taken care of via a reroute of engine oil. MB engineers were envolved in the experement. Injectors where opened up a lot too.

You should read it. Wonder where this experement ended up?
