W123 Diesel Air Cleaner Bracket
OK, before I take a 15 lb sledge to this piece of "fine Germen Engineering" I'll check with the group. How are you supposed to get the third bolt, the one on the motor, off. My bracket's broke, a seemingly simple job, but the third bolt eludes me. Do I really have to loosen and move the clamp on the turbo charger? Am I missing something that would make it easy to remove this sucker?
Thanks very much. I'll buy the bracket here. |

Yep - you got to unfasten the oil supply line and move it to remove the bracket. You will need a 13mm socket, a swivel and an extension to get to the fastener in the block. I have cut the bracket out of the way to "open" things up a bit. Make sure the socket is squarely on the fastener before pouring the coals to it. You don't want to round that sucker off.

I managed to get mine off without removing the oil supply line to the turbo. However, I could not install the new bracket without removing the line.
a swivel and extension would certainly make it easier. I got mine out using a socket and a 3/8" drive wrench and alot of sore fingers.

And if it is a little rounded, are there any tools worth looking into that might help remove this bolt? I'm going to get a cut-off tool to remove as much bracket as possible. The Oil supply line, does it have a gasket that will need to be replaced? is it available here or can I use form-a-gasket? This is really nuts for a piece that breaks all the time.
Thanks for comfirming my fears :-( |

To be honest I don't think Mercedes thought they'd break as often as they do.
Is it rounded off smooth? If its still got some shape to it you might try one of those gator sockets. If it can't grab ahold maybe file off a little of the sides on the head of the bolt and try it again.

What is this bracket made of? What kind of disc should I use to cut it off? I've never used a cut-off tool (full size anyway). I'm going to buy a 30 dollar special at one of the job lot clearance type places. It will be electric and I'll wear glasses. I kind of bent the entire thing trying to get it out so I'm formally hosed and need to take extraordinary measures. Are there stronger brackets available or will the replacement last another 200K? Thanks for all the info. I shoud stick to changing oil and fixing brakes :-( All this came about from a simple Air cleaner change after having pulled the guages out to change a bulb. YAAAACK !!!

THe replacement brackets are the same as the stock ones I think. At least they look he same. Mercedes source sells a kit the 'strengthen' the braket. It appears you are supposed to weld a washer to the braket at the rear bolt (where it tends to snap).
I doubt you'll get another 200k on it. Since the first 80-100k miles your motor probably pured like a kitten, and now it likely shakes like its got palsy. To get another 200k on the braket you'd likely need to.. a) Adjust the valves. b) Time the IP c) replace the motor mounts d) replace the braket
