95 E300D (OM 606 non turbo) engine oil

Hi, guys Ive been doing some searching on this website about engine oils, however I could not find answer to my question.

The MB dealer says to use Quaker State 15W40 non synthetic engine oil in our diesel. The PO used non synthetic as well so I would like to stay with a non synthetic oil too.

Anyways how is the Quaker State? should I look for other brands?

Any tips when doing the oil change?

Thanks

I have the same car. Your MB dealer is WRONG. Mercedes does specifically recommend synthetic oil for this car.

Refer to: http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html

I use Mobil 1 synthetic 0W40 year-round. Mobil 1 0W40 IS specifically approved by Mercedes for our Diesel car.

Mobil 1 0W40 is available from my MB dealer here in Montreal, and occasionally at Canadian Tire. If you can't find it call Esso and they'll direct you to their nearest Distributor in Toronto

Alternatively you can use Mobil 1 15W50, which is easier to find, and is always available at both Canadian Tires and Wal-Mart. Its too heavy an oil however for our Canadian winter use. That's why I prefer Mobil 1 0W40 as a year-round Synthetic Oil.

There are other good synths, too, rated CI-4 for diesel soot immersion, including Petro Canada Duron 5-40, Mobil Delvac 1 5-40 (same as Mobil truck and suv oil), Chevron Delo syn 5-40, Shell Rotella 5-40, a number of Amzoil products and more...

Also Mobil 1 15w-50 or

Delo 15w-40 if you don't want to go synthetic. You need a diesel rated oil.

Hello, I am jump starting my thread again :)

car: 95 E300D

After reading many "oil threads", I think I will stick with Shell Rotella 15W40 non-synthetic, 5000km intervals, for the warm days.

Now for winter, I am still debating...

Should I run Rotella 5w40 Synthetic for winter and switch to Rotella 15W40 non synthetic for summer?

I just dont see myself spending so much $$ on synthetic stuff like Delvac1 or Mobil . Since we do lots of city driving, I think its better to change the oil hot and often.

Do any of you run dino oil in your diesel, say 10W30 in Toronto winters, sometimes -20C.

DO any of you alternate bet synthetic and dino?

BTW the dealer says 10W30 in winter, 15W40 summer , all dino. How come back in 1995 they didn't recommend synthetic oils??

"Should I run Rotella 5w40 Synthetic"

That would be a better weight because of the 5w on the low side.

However for the ultimate winter oil try 0w-40 Mobil 1

I am running Delvac 5w-40 now and the engine doesn't crank any slower at 38 then it does at 90.

Thanks Hatterasguy,

I went over to canadian tire today and the "synthetic" Rotella T 5W40 aint that cheap, its $29.99 CAD/gallon and for comparison I saw Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1 synthetic for like $30.99 or $31.99! The damn Rotella aint any cheaper than the full blown sythetics!

Damn it, i dont know what oil to buy, do u guys think it would be again the mercedesshop forum law if I run dino in winter?

Does anyone run dino oil in their 1987-97 diesels? Anyone does it in winter??

Hatterasguy 10-25-2004 01:18 PM

Run dino and see how you do you might not need a full synthetic oil.

I pay $4.77 x 8=$38.16 US for every oil change! I don't know what that is in Canadian?

Hey,

I am not able to find in my area dino 10W30 (MB recommneds it for the 95 year model) or 5W30 weight oil, could you recommend any decent brands?

E300D 10-25-2004 01:53 PM

Hatterasguy, you pay 38.16 bucks for the oil only right? That is 46.68 canadian dollars. May I ask you what kind of oil you are using and the drain intervals?

For me, using Rotella T 15W40 dino, It costs me 46.00 dollars canadian for 8L liters of oil and MB oil filter.

Hatterasguy 10-25-2004 02:57 PM

Yeah $38.16 US is only for the oil the filter is another $11 give or take. I am running Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 in the winter and Mobil 1 15w-50 in the summer. I change it every 5k miles give or take.

Don't run a 5w-30 or 10w-30 in it! MB's like thicker oils and I can't think of any diesel rated oil in that weight range. CH-I I think is the new diesel rating.

Maybe Shell or Chevron offer something I don't know.
