Need oil pressure advice.

Ok I did a search but couldn't find what I wanted. My oil pressure is always between 1.5-2 at idle, but will not peg until 2krpm give or take. But sometimes it will peg at 1.5krpm or less. Temp doesn't seem to affect it to much. sometime's I will be cruising at 1,700 rpm and the guage will sit just below the line, like at 2.90bar. Is this normal? Or am I being to critical about a 17 year old guage that may or may not read correctly.

The oil is Mobil 1 15w-50 that is 500 miles old, filter is Heignst and the two O-rings on the shaft were replaced in March. Sending unit is also new.

I don't think that's normal, from what a tech buddy tell's me.

You didn't state what kind of oil was used in past and how often it was changed. If it has 200,000+ miles it could be one or both of the following.

You may have a oil pick-up screen in the pan partly plugged or a oil pump going south.

If your car has the lower sump, that pan is easy to remove to check the pick-up screen.

It does not sound normal but its not out of spec.

Mercedes states that it should Peg by 3,000RPM or less. So your's is within spec.

Mine pegs at 1,500 RPM

My 91 300D behaves exactly the same as your 300SDL. It's been this way for the last 100K miles. As I recall the minimum oil pressure are idle is something like .3 bar and it must rise to 3 bar by 3,000 RPM.

It's normal.

Forgot to mention that oil cooler can be clogged from road oil and gunk. I had that problem myself, oilcooler was black from road oil and gunk. After cleaning at car wash, engine temp has dropped and oil pressure is up.

Most every MB diesel I've been in pegs at idle when cold and is between .8-2.5 at idle when hot. Mine always pegs by 1100rpm.

The oil cooler lines and cooler are new, I don't know the service history of the engine, but it has no blow-by and doesn't seem to use any oil, it looks clean inside looking threw the oil cap. Maybe it is temp related because today the car was running right on the 80c line and it was pegging around 1,500. It always pegs at idle when cold, and as it warms up the oil pressure drops to the normal 1.5-2 bar range.
