Transmission Oil

After looking at my transmission oil level on my 83 sd (i'm guessing about 1L missing ) i decided that it might be a good idea to change it
Looking for oil i saw that the original ATF oil is about 11$ to 13$ per litre.
I find it a bit $$
Manual says that i need around 7.5 ( if my memory is good)
I used the search fonction and i read something about Mobil synthetique ATF oil
My car has 414k km.

I have a small dilema
Should i change all the fluid with the synthetique Mobil and the filter ?
should i just fille up the missing oil ?
Should i go MB all the way ?

Any input is welcome
btw i don't wanna start a long oil tread/war :p

YES!!! Just what these long days of summer are needing. ANOTHER OIL THREAD!!
I have , and would recommend, draining all the trans oil you can get out it, then replacing the filter, and then with your new filter adding Mobil 1 synthetic Automatic trans fluid. Be sure to drain the convertor. There is a drain plug on that also.

Old Deis,

Yup, I missed that. I would also suggest Mobil1 as that is what I use.

anyone try this?

mine is 89 300CE, 166K

I took car to indy for tranny service. They over filled it, and I won't be going back there. As I sucked out the excess, I found the tranny fluid still smelled burnt. I want to change it again.

Can I just just disconnect the return line from the radiator, leave the car running, catch the old fluid while adding new through the dipstick hole? I'll wait for clean fresh fluid to come out the return line, then re-connect the line and make sure the level is correct.

Will I then have clean fresh fluid in my tranny?

dwest, assuming your transmission has a drain for the torque converter, there's no need for the 'disconnect return line' method. MB made it so the pan and torque converter can be drained to get most (>85%?) of the fluid replaced with little fuss or mess. The 'disconnect return line' method is reserved for cars with no drain for the torque converter (personal recommendation).

I took my 82 td to the transmission shop with the oil smelling burnt and going into reverse slow and the tech told me to let 'er go until rebuild time. At least you had too much fresh!

Should i listen to the tech or do you all think I should keep changing to try to bring it back??

Cheers------Bill---
