valve job 87' 300td

i need help trying to decide if i should do a $2700 valve job on my 87 300td. i purchased the car with 150k about 6 months ago. the car now has 198k. i brought the car to my tech for poor power off the line. new filters, cleaned strainer, checked turbo, dropped exhast, still no power. he then checked compression. low on two cylinders. i have spent alot on the car in 6 months but i think it may be time to punt. should I spend to money or quit while i'm sill behind? thanks for any input

Joe

seems a little steep

I think you can almost get a rebuilt engine for that much money... I could be wrong though. The other potential issue here is whether or not the fault is actually the valves. Did he do a leak down test? Could be rings, or a variety of other factors causing the low readings. I don't think I would jump on that deal though. You can find a fairly decent albeit a little older 300 for about that same money.
Unless the rest of the car has had considerable work down to it i.e. tranny rebuild or something I think you are potentially throwing money into it... Just my opinion though.

87 was famous for cracked heads. You should do a search and determine if you have the original head. If there is a 14 on the head just above no. 2 injector its original

I replaced my 603 in my 87 300DT because of a cracked head.

The replacement engine with 167K cost me $1500. I did the transplant myself.
