GregS,
Drop by your local Wal-Mart or similar store. Pick up a pour-spout with ON/OFF valve for about $1.50. Impco sells one for about $4. They screw onto the oil bottles, do not leak, and provide you the extra 'reach' needed to get to the fuel filler opening. Insert the spout, open the valve, count to one, close the valve, let it drain, and stow the bottle in the trunk. ------------------ William 76 240D (W115) - 550K miles 78 300D (W123) - 200K+ miles |

Larry:
I've heard about the antifreeze/atf contamination issue before, but I think it only applies to Allison transmissions that use a certain type of clutch. Are you sure it the same applies to MB trannys? |

I've spoken with a fuels/lubes chemist about this. He says that lubricity in current D2 fuels may indeed be too low for certain older pumps, but that it varies for different fuels. Some may be fine right from the pump. Adding a few oz. of oil should help, but he recommends a straight-weight, low-ash oil. The VI improvers in multi-vis oils can be a problem. A 2-stroke oil would probably be best, as it's ash-free and made to mix & burn.

What is an "ash free" oil?
I've started putting in a couple of ounces of straight 30 weight non detergent engine oil into the fuel tank at every fill up in my 240D. If memory serves, I don't recall the bottle saying it was ash free. Would it say on the bottle it is ash free? |

Guys DO NOT put engine oil in your fuel tank along with diesel you are wasting money and not helping the engine at all. MBZ diesel injection pumps do not have any problems with wear from lack of lubricity of fuel etc. They are very high quality, extremely durable(indestructible) Bosch units that are lubricated with your crankcase oil continuously.
The injection pumps having problems with diesel fuel lubricity are totally different design. |

We have a 300D (non-turbo) and a 300SD, both 1981 models.
Owned the 300D since '83 and the 300SD has been in the "family" since new. We've always bought Red Line by the case and carry several bottles in the trunk. Even with the high cost of the stuff, each bottle is good for 10 fillups (at 20 gallons each fillup) and is an accepted routine of owning the diesels. We do not put a lot of miles on the cars and use them usually for highway trips so the cost of the stuff may become a concern for some folks who drive their diesels as everyday commuter car. (The SD may get filled up twice a month ? So a bottle of Red Line could last as long as 5 months sometimes.) |

I use HOWE'S Fuel Treatment - available at most truck stops. It lubricates, contains anti-gel, & cleans the injectors. Since I began using it two years ago, I rarely see any exhaust smoke. It's about $8 for gallon bottle which treats over 400 gallons of fuel!
