1996 E300D, Code P0380

Hello, I have a 1996 E300D with the check engine light and engine electronics malfunction lights on. Lately during a start cycle the glow plug light fails to come on and the engine will not start. It does not happen all the time, but it is becoming more regular and the check engine / engine electronics malfunction lights came on. The glow plugs were replaced at 85K miles and the car now has 97K miles. Sometimes during a start cycle the green/red lights will flash on and off on the rearview mirror. I saw in another thread that they mean different things if they flash together or separately. The last few times they haven't flashed so I don't know if they are flashing in sequence or out of sequence. I took the car to Autozone where they pulled the code P0380 - "Glow Plug Circuit A Malfunction". Does anyone know what P0380 or "Glow Plug Circuit A Malfunction" means? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Paul

P0380 code follow up

Well my check engine light was reset at autozone and did not come back on for several weeks. But, I am sorry to say it is back on. During a start cycle the glow plug light will come on sometimes, and sometimes it will not. When it does not come on the car will not start if it has not been started in sometime, hence glow plugs not warm. When attempting to start car and glow plug light does not come on, the displays in radio and AC/heat control flashes on and off. In my previous post I mentioned the red/green lights flashed on the rearview mirror. I haven't noticed this happening anymore. Does anyone have an idea what code P0380/malfunction in glow plug circuit A means? Thanks, Paul

Have you confirmed that all 6 of your GPs are good? How many miles ago they were changed doesn't really matter. GPs don't wear out w/in a certain number of miles like spark plugs. Their life depends on how much they are used. So with that ammount of miles it is very possible a GP has gone bad.

Make sure all of the GPs are good. If they are good, move on to the GP relay. It may have gone bad.
