I know this is old. But did the light sockets you got from Autolumination work? I was going thru the thread and couldn't find any response from you.

TIA, Dave

Did anyone have luck with the 1157 bulb and socket? Twin tail lights AND twin brakes lights would be perfect.

I share your sentiments and if I may say so, I'll be doubly interested when we find a source for 1157 sockets AND reliable, truly long lasting, L.E.D. bulbs that actually fit through and into the lenses of our MBZ(s)! Then we will have double L.E.D. brake and tail lights.

Does anyone out there really have a definitive handle on whether or not the L.E.D. bulbs would cause some sort of interference with other systems on some models... e.g. the cruise control system?
Regards,

Regards,
It's already been covered that using LEDs in place of regular bulbs in the brake circuit will affect the operation of the cruise control. Again, this is because the cruise control unit uses the brake light bulbs as the ground path -- when you put on the brakes, this ground goes "high" and the cruise shuts off. The LEDs have the same effect as having corroded and/or non-OE bulbs. You can add a bypass resistor to mitigate this, and that's been discussed in the thread as well.

LED's will not work well, period. The reflectors are not designed for them and it will only look like a single dot in the middle.

I guarantee that my cruise control will work just as well with 1156 bulbs or even LEDs as it does with genuine mercedes bulbs... the missing actuator and control unit told me so!

So what is the differemce between a mercedes bulb and an 1156?

Thanks Lance - I have read much the same about the problem as you have described... however I believe this symptom is due to the current generation of L.E.D. lights and the very directional light beams they emit.
Surely there is a market for direct L.E.D. replacement bulbs [say the 1156 and the very common 1157)… L.E.D. replacements that emit nearly 360 Deg. light beams ?

Side emitting LEDs (if you can find them) work quite well in a 123.

I'd love to hear more about these " Side emitting L.E.D.s "... tell us more... doe you have a source... are they designed to be plug-compatible with the 1156 or even better the 1157 two-function tail/brake bulbs... and are the physically able to fit throuth the tail-light lens and illuminate properly. Tell us more... while I go "Googling"!!

123 Brake Light / Tail Light Modification

I hope there is not a problem bumping up an old thread. I now see this modification as a regular offering on ebay. I was planning to do this with the junk yard sockets I gathered last week. Reading this thread seems to prove the extra current draw is not a danger to the wiring.

However, I want to make these extra tail lights which would be on for a longer period of time. I've already monted a high brake light on the rear glass at the package shelf. Following my wife as she drove the 123 home the other night, I noticed we had the weakest tail light on the highway. I more concerned about being seen on the highway now.

Will the wiring handle the extra current for using the fog light spots to create a total of 4 tail lights?

Anything newer on Sam's idea for 1157 sockets and would that overload the wiring?

Charles
