I did this on both of my rides, great cheap mod... heck I even used junkyard light bulbs!

Still have a set of sockets left!
Mercedes owners, I know this extra set of stop lites in the rear of my W123 have save me from getting rear ended. They are awesome - really. I have one set left, $5.00 shipped. Also, Bajaman and myself are going to finish pulling the engine and transmission from my 83 W123 parts car. Have some really nice parts available, hood, grille, front bumper, trunk lid, battery tray, rear doors. Color is midnight blue. Let me know if you can use something.

Bump it up again
Bump!
I still have one set of genuine W123 tail light sockets. Seems like this market has pretty much dried up, but if you have not added to the Factory tail light set up on W123, you are missing a real good safety item and an easy installation. Shipped for $7.50

Yes, but in the old days grease was free and diesel 1.88
Just trying to keep up with inflation. Diesel here in Noblesville $3.68 a gallon. What, are they crazy? Have been keeping the Benz in the garage and running the town car. So I went up a little on my "genuine" MBZ socket. Not much, what maybe 30%. Probably won't sell them anyway.

I have atleast 3 people on the list right now who want sockets. Maybe they will contact you. I told them to look for someone with a set.
My 300SD is awaiting its pair (currently just bulbs + solder + wire = extra brake lights. |

Brake Light Mod
Just did the mod suggested - avoided inline splices or insulation needs by installing a parts car socket in the innermost hole of each and soldering a runner to the brake light's (Middle; Red and Black/Swartz & Rut) contact tab and to the added socket's tab. The old wires are crimped as well as soldered, so easiest to just cut them off and solder over them with the new wire. [NOTE: Run the new wires so they are clear of the outer edge where the carrier bar meets the plastic housing, to avoid crimping and difficulty re-clipping the bar to the housing.]
CAUTION: Be gentle with the tabs holding the metal clip to the plastic housing, as well as the tabs on the sockets - they could be as brittle as were mine (fortunately, had several of those around, as well...) So far, has worked fine with the cruise control kickoff (no real reason why it shouldn't) and has not blown the 8A fuse (#12). QUESTION:- Does anyone know of a later model center brake light which has the right angle for the coupe (W123 280CE/300CD) and could mount without major problems above the tank in the back sill? Possibly a late model, '85 or so, or a 350/450SLK, maybe? Would like to tie that in, as well; going to the red/blk runner going into trunk, perhaps. People are starting to expect to see that higher light... |

Brake Light Mods for 123's
Re the brightness levels on added brake lights - seem to faintly recall from Navy basic electronics school (1967) that if you placed two equal resistors in parallel, the effective resistance was halved, which could result in twice the normally-allowed current draw from the 12-14V across the actual resistors (bulb filaments)...which would produce twice the wattage output??????
Circular reasoning or basic theory error? Gotta be some 'tweets out there who can address this... |
