Question Pump for 124 auto-leveling rear suspension

In another thread, it was noted that
"the pump for the rear suspension, if neglected, can get really expensive to fix."

In my case, it took out the engine. The PO of my 300TD was cruising the autoroute at about 100mph (a cop, he didn't worry about tickets). Shrapnel from the failed pump broke the timing chain and strewed hatefull negative politics about the top end. Vacation skewered, he impulse traded in the 300TD for a 'Yoda, hence I was able to get the good deal I got. I had to buy a used motor, natch.

Question: Other than changing the fluid every other year, how to "maintain" a rear suspension pump? My manual is silent on its maintenance.

Wow, nobody knows how to take care of that sucker? Are wagons that rare in the US? Here in Yurrup, even the sedans could have the auto-leveling suspension as a factory option.
