I have a copy of the dealer s/w for the VW goup - covers all cars up to the late 90's. Is there anything similar for mercs that will enable me to work out exact p/n that I need rather than having to deal with the dealership in finding p/n's

Yes. A member that goes by speedy300dturbo should be able to direct you to a source. Or try eBay. Make sure you get the EPC, not the simpler parts explosion diagrams. Or maybe the parts explosions are good enough.

found them.
It's not a cd but in hard copy form.
It covers mostly the body but not the engine.
Also the prices are in Euro's.
