power steering pump

Larry i see you advised someone else who used ATF in their ps pump to go to the junkyard and buy a used one. Why not replace the seals? Isn't that what ATF affects? Or does it tear up other things which force you to replace the pump? What about the feed/return hoses? Should they be changed too?
Thanks--Bill

When I bought my MB the PS had AT fluid in it and MB dealer in St Louis said no problem. The reason I called them was steering box was leaking, and still is after switching to power steering fluid from parts store. Let me state here that the pump is not leaking, just the steering box. Just the other day I added some of the PS stop leak fluid, and will let everyone know the out come.

Also of note another MB dealership advised not to just replace seals, they usally don't last long enough to justify the cost and work. Part of the problem the dealership said is worn internal mechanical parts on a car with high mileage.

That's a tough nut to get past with a rebuilt box going for $450 or so exchanged. Not to mention what did they rebuild, did they replace worn mechanicals, etc.

MB dealership advised...

My problem was not worn out pump. The pump worked fine until I topped it off with ATF like the book says to do. Sure enough the pump started leaking less than a week later, requiring disassembly to replace the main seal which I have not done yet. I did however flush the pump/steering box out with power steering fluid which BTW is what was in it. Using the search I found that todays ATF is completely different from the ATF of yesteryear. I also found that Larry Bible said to replace the pump with one from the junkyard [about $125] when this happens [mistakenly put in ATF]. Also using the search I find that some pumps are fine after reseal and some never pump again. Since Larry himself hasn't answered I guess that means his own experience has been not good with replacing the seals. I guess I'm gonna find out. I got a box of parts with this car and included is, I believe, the seals I need. I guess if your car has ATF in it and it doesn't leak, leave it alone and don't do like I did--fix it so it needs more fixing!! I'll let you know how my rebuild works but will not have timeto work on it until next week.
Happy Trails ,
Bill

I guess I wasn't lucky, my steering pump was unaffected, but the steering box below now has a steady leak. I just looked up a new steering box and it's $1100+ for the thing. Steering pump new is $510, wish that had been the problem instead of steering box.

I suppose any kind/brand will do, I'm using Wall-Mart brand now since it's 1/3 the price of name brand at part's store.

My leak has only been about 1/2 qt per 1000 mile's, so it's not like the cars not driveable. I just hate that I have to have a drip tray under the car.

Any p/s fluid, Wal Mart or otherwise will work fine in these older systems. The much newer systems, like late nineties I think changed to seals that work with ATF.

There is nothing wrong with changing seals and giving it a shot. You need to inspect the shaft though. Often it will have a groove especially if ATF was run for an extended length of time.

Once the system starts leaking with ATF, changing to PS fluid will probably not correct anything.

Good luck,

All I did was top it off with ATFand within 5 days the pump was leaking. Couldn't have been much more than 1/4 cup. 6 days after I put ATF in I flushed the system [following directions I got from this forum] and removed my pump. It was not run 500 miles with ATF so I hope the shaft is ok. i will for sure check it though.

Thank you once again Mr. Bible. You're the man!!!

Bill
