I have an Intercooler question.
I have an intercooler that my friend gave me. it was free, and will fit perfectly behind my headlight... the problem is it was stored in a barn for quite some time and I think there might be some dust and other junk in it. Anyone know how I can clean it. I was thinking of taking it to a radiator shop... but if I can clean it myself then I'd like to do that.

Blow it out with compressed air, use some dish soap and run alot of hot water through it.
How are you going to get airflow to it if it's behind the headlight? Will you cut out the fog light? |
thats the debate that i've been having with myself. i was going to cut out the fog light... but then i want euro lights!!! so i'm currently not sure what i'm going to do... i was thinking of installing an electric fan... not exactly the best solution to the problem, but its all i got. i like your install. i was just reading your post over at Schuman. but my AC works good, and i just installed a tranny cooler.

electric fan would be fantastic. then you could locate it anywhere. and for cleaning it out i would get a big steel pot throw acetone and some extremly strong cleaning solution into the tank and a couple gallons of water then put it on a burner for a couple hours and come back to it and flush it out. is this an air to air intercooler? you could go to a carwash and pressure washer if you wana clean it really well.

I hate to ask a stupid question... but here goes. Does the intercooler simply redirect airflow between the turbo and the intake manifold to a (radiator?) for cooling? I have done some searching and that was what I came up with.. Mostly based on Forced and Bgkast's fotos on the site.
Is there a simple answer to the air/air or air/water question? Thanks in advance guys... |
the colder the air the more dence, thus more air being pushed into the engine, it makes the turbo more effecant. air/air works by having air move throught the "radiator" inorder to cool the intake charge. an air/water is pretty much the same thing, only it uses water as a middle man to carry away the extra heat energy, it is a good solution to the placement problem we have in these benz's that wern't desgined to have an intercooler, but you have to run a pump (or use auxilary pump) to flow the water and you have to find room to place a secondary radiator to get the heat energy out into the air. I'm looking to make this as simple as possable so i'm still working on the air/air option. but nothing is set in stone.

So can the turbo be re-assembled so the air out-put is facing in a different direction, without moving the turbo oil return line? It looks like that would be possible, but Ive never taken one (turbo) apart... It seams that with that done it just becomes a plumbing project... This was all based on a quick look in the rain, I could be way off....

i actuly haven't done it. but i've seen it done, it can't be that hard to figure out. maybe someone who has clocked the trubo can chime in and asnwer the question.

Air/Water is the most practical for the W123. Air-air will involve body cutting and A/C removal .
