Post your EGTs

Those of you who have a pyrometer please post some EGT readings. Please include engine type and body, pyrometer location, driving situation, and modifications.

617 Turbo w/ stock T3 turbo in a 240D/4 speed stick, Pyrometer pre-turbo

Stock (from memory): 600* F cruise at 65 mph, 500-550* F around town, 1100* F highest seen after long 4th gear pull up hill

Air/water intercooler installed:

475* F cruise at 65, 400-450* F around town, 950* F highest seen, 750* F after 0-60 run

EDIT: now that I have fixed my boost problem I an at 450* cruise at 60, 650* after a 0-60 run and can not get any higher than 850* on a long, full load pull.

Intercooler+GT2056V turbo: 425-450* F cruise at 65, 375* F around town, 650* F after 0-60 run

Some interesting tidbits I found:
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=206994

Quote:
Now that I have an EGT gage I've found that at WOT thru the first 4 gears it hit 1720 F, steadily climbing there in 4th gear to about 95 MPH.
Quote:
Measured at the turbine inlet (not the downpipe) you can run the following without time limits:

Cited directly from Garrett and KKK
GT-15: 1550F/843C
VNT-15/17 and all other series: 1650F/898C
KP39: 1904F/1040C

Go above those temperatures and you are completely on your own. Often a few seconds (5-10) and no more than 50F should not result in damage. Keep in mind that the Inconel alloy is very strong at it's maximum rated temperature, once you get above that temp range the strength and durability of the alloy plummet exponentially with time and temp.
Quote:
More than just the effect on the turbo itself (see Drivbiwire post) is the effect on other parts of the engine. For example, on my Mitsubishi, I've discovered that, with inlet temps above abt 1300 F for more than a few minutes [that equates to about 12psi boost continuously] the EXHAUST VALVES STRETCH! Then I have to go in and adjust the valves (not hydraulic lifter equipped).
Whether or not this happens on the TDI is unknown. Consider though, that if the turbine inlet temp is at 1500F, the exhaust valve edges are at least that hot. This CAN lead to cupping of the valve head due to the spring pressure and compression if the whole valve head begins to creep. The best way to think about creep phenomena is to imagine the part - in this case a valve head - made of very slowly deforming plastic.

Bluebird Wanderlodge CAT 3208 with aftermarket turbo. Pyrometer pre-turbo. 1100 degress on a steep long climb under normal conditions. Same climb with a dirty air filter 1275 degrees.
With clean air filter on a flat road at 65mph it runs around 600 degrees.

You need to re-plumb that thing with an air-to-air aftercooler Kerry ;~)

Thats a chilling description about exhaust valve creep, Forced... I think I won't be pushing anything over 1200 for any amount of time thank you very much...

pre-turbo sensor W/ big A/W IC, no rack limiter, GM 3.8 airbox, T3-45@16-20psi:

highest ever: ~1050°F WOT, loaded down, up a hill for about 5min
around town: 450-650°F
highway: 650-850°F (depending on speed and grade)

I bet with no rack limiter if I found a way to lug it down around 2500rpm WOT I could get it to make higher EGTs, but the way it is it just aint happening. I'm sure they will go way up when I make it rev 5K+ and crank the TC...

I have a 190d with an om602 turbo.

Pyro is pre-turbo where all the pipes of the exhaust manifold collect.

Boost set to about 14.5-almost 15 psi.

1 1/4 turns for the full load screw. Alda leaned out to the max and still smokes a lot off boost. No excessive smoke under full load.

My egt gauge starts at around 900*f so in normal driving conditions I never see it move. It'll get to about 1200*f at the top of 3rd gear (~5000rpm ~120kph) if I do a fast standing still start.

At around 140kph in 4rth pedal to the metal (4rth pegs out at 160kph) it's at about 1200-1300*f and climbing fast. That's where I lift off.

'84 617.952, no rack limiter, stock turbo, stock exhaust, big A/W IC, DN0SD265 nozzles @138bar, timing 26*BTDC, COLLAR GROUND OFF THE DELIVERY VALVES

EGTs: climb to 1100*F in no time flat. Like, 1 WOT pull from 0-80 (which takes around 30sec, maybe less). This mod really works. need more airflow!

a smidge off topic

So if a fella is wanting a EGT kit, Gauge, sensor etc....
What is the cheapest, good, reliable one?
I'm thinking of installing it in one of the central air vents (boost gauge in the other) so sized appropriately for that location, and while I am skating on off topic ice, what do you guys like for a boost gauge and installed in that location?

I used the gauge and sender package from here: http://www.egauges.com/vdo_mult.asp?Type=Pyrometer&Series=Cockpit&Units=E

and the 30 PSI boost gauge: http://www.egauges.com/vdo_mult.asp?Type=Turbo_Boost&Series=Cockpit&Units=E

They are a close match to the factory gauges.

Thanx buddy, Those will look great! I placed my order with them.

Not for me. EGTs go through the roof in a heartbeat.

Here is a video just going 65-80mph. I couldn't get a 0-60 since I was up to 1250*f by the top of 2nd gear!
