Cam Specs

Can anyone give me the stock cam specs for a 617.951 MD engine ??

I am wondering if any power can be had from a cam regrind or a custom cam.

Would more lift / duration help...intake or exhaust??

If anyone has ideas I could use them....

Yes, Mercedes already changed the cam for more power in 1980.

I have done a couple of custom tractor cams and I have some extra material and contacts.

FI thanks for the info.
I will get the cam out of my spare engine and get some specs.

With a spare car I can mock up lots of stuff then transfer them to the other car.
As I have read the IP is the limit...and since I have NO knowledge of the workings of the IP I have to let someone else do that....but I plan on some CNC headwork on my bad head to work a port design that is better than stock BUT no just hog it out.
I'm glad a performance section was added
I have had idea's and this would be a great section to bounce them off more seasoned MB techs.

Looking at a race engine cam I would rather touch the duration of opening than the max. lift by making the ramps harder. Timing between inlet and outlet seems to be a bit more difficult to calculate as there are differences between n/a and turbos.
Changing the duration means a complete new cam not just grinding.
Would make sense to me if any other cam could be taken an grinded only.

@ all BUT: What about grinding the cam of the ip?

Making the upwards movement of the plunger retarded and faster by just grinding the ramp harder.
The result will be a retarded start of movement (this must be compensated by ip timing) in combination with a shorter time of the plunger stroke. This will result in a shorter delivery period (the amount of fuel will not be affected) which will move the end of delivery away from TDC, therefore will reduce black smoke or/and will enable to increase the full load adjustment and still have no black smoke. Better atomisation/efficiency are side benefits.

I never followed this idea because grinding a cam is far beyond my possibilities.

I have been reading up on 300+ Hp 603, 12 valve engines and am wondering what the stock valve timing is.

Try Reed Cams and see if they have any custom grinds for your car ....
They have been very helpful in making some strange cams for me....your performance may vary .
