I drove home today with the tail gate ajar- and the drivers windows open. I smelled nothing. Of course this is not a scientific test, but it did tell me that either my nose is bad, the gases that came in the cabin was odorless, or very little gases came inside the cabin. My doors have a hard time closing when all the other doors and windows are shut, they close with less force when a window or door is open. This has only cause- a tight seal inside the car. It's getting closer to two weeks and there is still very little soot on the tailgate. I have smelled nothing out of the ordinary since losing the muffler, and I see nothing changed on the tailgate as far as the amount soot. While others may have/had issues, at this time I have no indications of anything out of the ordinary. Revans id you have a muffler with a downturn at the end? How far did it stick out the back? Your picture link does not work for me.

Yes the tail pipe turned down at the end but it only went as far as the bumper and it was higher than yours is. We have a steep driveway and both reverse lights eventually got broken when they hit the ground as we turned to go up the driveway. If you were coming to visit I think you would have to park on the street. My doors seal up pretty well also. And I even tried replacing the rear door seal and adjusting the latch. I used to have to crack open the rear windows if I opened the front ones so the exhaust fumes could escape out the rear windows. It was the worst if you open the front windows only about one and a half inches for maximum vacuum with the blower off. It did vary from day to day depending on the direction of the wind. Since your pipe is lower and extends back so far maybe you won't get as much exhaust accumulating behind the car. The black soot in the photo is from before turning the tail pipe.

Hi all,
I hate to mention this, but have you guys ever cut the back muffler(resonator) apart? I did, just because I had one that was really rusted out on the bottom, and guess what? It's just a big glasspack! Honest! The pipe runs straight through. There are no baffels. If it puts on any backpressure it can't be much. Cheers, Chris |

The 300D mufflers may be straight through but the 300SD mufflers are not

Sorry, I should have specified that the muffler was off a 300 turbodiesel.

What year? Was there a raised Mercedes emblem on the case? How about a part number? You're talking about the one that's about 8-10 inches in diameter and bout 24-30 inches long behind the rear axle, right?

My now lost muffler was not straight thru- and it had small stuff inside that rattled around but did not come out either end.

This may be a dumb question, but has anyone tried using a muffler that is tuned to be quieter on a much higher output engine??? (i.e. a large V8 or something)...should get much better flow without having to worry about the sound I would imagine (or I could sincerely be off my rocker)...

Using a muffler made for non-turbo engines will restrict the exhaust. You could probably get a muffler from a small diesel truck (Like Frito-Lay/UPS) that use large 4-banger diesels.
