617 NA IP questions
Hi, I'm a new member of this forum and I would like to know if it is possible to tune the IP of a NA engine to run with a turbo, or I should look for another engine

First do your routine maintenance, Air filter change, fuel filter change, Valve adjustment, Oil change, Tranny filter change and fluid. Second You cannot put a turbo charger in a NA motor, because the intake/exhaust valves wont be able to handle the higher stress that the turbo makes, because the turbo charged diesel has sodium valves which can handle higher stress, The Diesel Injector is not made for turbo charged so it wont spray the right amount of fuel for the engine with will cause damage to engine and it wont run right, If you want some power off the line i suggest to adjust the ALDA there should be DIY link that show how to do it, BUT I MUST WARN U, you must have all the routine maintance done FIRST!!! Just go with the Turbodiesel lots more power, better on fuel too and if you do your homework you can make it run faster like what most of the forum member do... AND WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!

Thank you Actros617 for the quick replay, so I'm right that I should change the engine.
I need more torque this engine - OM 617 is installed on my G Wagen which is our snow plow and we need more torque I have read that there was a kit for that engine from STT specially build for 300GD G wagen but if you think that the engine won't be able to take the stress I will go for a newer engine like 300d - 24V or 290TD. It is sad because I just rebuild the engine and the gearbox - auto very expensive here in Bulgaria. the engine works great but it suffers uphill, or if you decide to overpass someone |

You can run a turbo on a non-turbo engine, but you can not run as high of boost as a factory turbo, and don't expect 400,000 out of the engine. You will also need to make the injection pump give more fuel, which may be addressed with the turbo kit, or you could install an injection pump from a turbo engine.

I also think that this is possible, but how can I increase de amount of fuel on this IP?
Is it possible to increase the fuel without damage on the idle? What should be the EGT in Celsius? How much boost should I run the turbo? I,m thinking to build my own exhaust manifold and to use an AUDI 2.5 VGT garret turbo is this a suitable one? |

Remove rack limiter for more fuel, adjust IP timing to 26* BTDC, tap into the oil pressure gauge line for oil feed, drill a hole in the oil pan for oil return, run less than 10psi boost and you'll be set. I'm running a Garrett TB03 from a volvo 740i at 8psi. EGT's stay below 1,000*F and idle remains the same. It hangs with turbodiesels all day, but longevity is sacrificed, so I wouldn't do it unless you've got less than 200k miles.

Most definitely swap your engine. Turbo engines are built much stronger.

Hi Diesel123Dan
My engine is fully rebuild (overhauled) and if I make the conversion I won't expect more than 200 000 km and if the engine goes for so long I will be quite satisfied. As i explained this is not an everyday car we drive it winter season only when the snow is higher than 25 cm. I would like to know how much will the torque go up and if it is a satisfying number I'll go for the conversion |

Why not sell the engine and use that money to get a turbocharged engine...

Why not have fun with what you have?
I'm not sure the numbers but it is quite significant increase over stock. You can definately feel the difference. |
