couple of questions.

Does it smoke on startup, Does it smoke @ WOT, How is the idle/rpm?

How many miles, recent tune up (injectors balanced just not new nozzles)?

I specifically bought a Mecedes IDI because they are about THE most tolerant engine there is when it comes to alternative fuels, and that's what I wanted - to be able to use alternative fuels.

Nope. You covered the only significant power upgrade, a turbo engine swap.

You can disable the EGR (if you have one) and eliminate the neck-down section of the snorkel tube going to the air filter lid. Neither will make the car a rocket but they will make it a tad bit more efficient.

Installing a K&N will just wear out the engine faster and modifying the exhaust will just make more noise.

sethyboy85 no it does not smoke on startup or at wot. As far as a tune up I have only changed the oil and filters. It has 177k miles on it. It idles at about 750-850. I have not balanced the injectors is this complicated. Or is this something that if the car idles and doesnt smoke leave it alone.
ForcedInduction i belive my car does have an egr setup. I know it has a hose that comes from the exhaust into to the intake behind the filter. What do you mean by elimanate the neck down section. could you be more specific or does any one have pics of this done to their car.

I would say you are probably okay, getting the injectors pop/balanced is not a DIY job. Several people on the board do it for a very very reasonable fee, in the near future I will be able to do it as well.

If you aren't leaving smoke behind you at WOT then you aren't wasting fuel out the exhaust pipe= good. No smoke on startup= good compression, good spray. Solid idle without fluctuation again good.

You could decide to waste some fuel and make smoke to annoy people. You can go with lighter wheels and skinnier tires for better MPG and slight acceleration. Do what Force suggested. After that I don't have anything other then maybe a highway speed ram air setup of sorts to create a negligible amount of more torque outweighing any $$ gains for a very long time.

My mistake. The 2.5L did not have that.
