I much prefer to read and learn from others tests than to waste my time repeating what they have already done.

The Saab IC might be good for a turbo'd 240D, but a 617 would outflow its capabilities.

Which of the Saab intercoolers was used in the test? I could be wrong but from what I read there, it seems to be the one off a Viggen,

which is not the same as, say the one of a pre-facelift 9000 or a Classic 900, the later being the one is being used here.

I might b e able to find a better pic- but under the cover in the center with both the intake and exit facing the same direction is the Blackstone IC. It came in two forms- an all metal and a version with plastic ends. Some had more "chambers" (13) if IRRC and other versions had less (9?). The "9" version is less restrictive. My actual use- not book reading- has proven that the unit is more than suitable, and provides excellent cooling until my RPM are over 4000 and I and still have my foot in it. This only happens over 80 mph. My upper boost level is around 16psi- which is too high. I'd be fine with 14 psi. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...setup002-1.jpg

To the top for this thread and excellent information. I am putting a 617 into a 1991 Toyota pickup truck using an adapter that is finally ready from a company called www.4x4labs.com (I appologize for the photos link causing computers to crash -- I'm working on this right now, I do their web site). It will be documented on the www.4btswaps.com site where there have been a few other 617 swaps into Toyotas.

One thing is 617s with manual transmissions really shine and you notice how much the Benz autos suck a lot of power out of these engines. They are actually quite torquey which is important for this application.

The truck will use the Toyota 5 speed (so two adapters total, Benz to GM via 4x4labs, and an Advance Adapter GM to Toyota adapter). The good news is this all allows for a big GM v8 clutch.

Then nothing too big tire wise, something like a tall skinny 33" tire and 4.10 axle gearing with a mild lift in the truck...

I thought I would let you all know...

Here is the truck. I will also be adding 1988 4.10 Land Cruiser front axle using a 1995 style coil spring radius arm/coil setup for added beefyness. The truck in general will be a "overland" style off road vehicle mostly for around here in Utah with mild/medium off roading..

Yikes- Nothing says cheap engine swap like spending $2k on adapters.
Why not do a single step? The user "someone" on there made a very simple adapter to put the engine in, although I can't speak for the strength of the 4cyl transmission. I'm going with a small block Ford transmission, and I have to make my own adapter, but that's the easy part.
