And the official answer is....
So that's yes for the master cylinder and yes on the starter being on the same side. I sure hope this helps someone in the future. This is what we are starting with. Notice the nice fender that a tree made for me yesterday

swap postponed for a while. Currently getting the wagon ready for daily use and the SD ready to live at in-laws in another state. AND school starts tomorrow. Plus two new kittens and the possibility of buying a house in October.

I figured I should post an update....
I ran out of places to store cars and had to sell off the 190d parts car. I sold it with the transmission in it I still have the the 87 300d and it's in the garage of my new house for the winter. I am keeping my eyes open for another transmission/parts car to do the swap.

Ok I am back, for real. I have the space and I have the time.
I have two transmissions to chose from and I don't know which one to get. I can get a 717.410 5spd from 190d, unknown year OR 717.411 5spd from 190e 2.3. Gear Ratio 717.410----------------4.23, 2.36, 1.49, 1.00, 0.84(0.81), R4.63, D3.42(3.23) (3.91>11/85) 717.411----------------3.91, 2.32, 1.42, 1.00, 0.78 Any idea which one I want? I am going to grab one either tomorrow or monday. The 190e is a gray market. Also need an idea what tools to take with me. Thanks

After triple checking it will bolt up I would get the .411. Overdrive will be nice to have.

I got the .410 today and I am going back for the .411 tomorrow or wednesday. I have a friend that really thinks I need the .410 for the lower 1st gear. I have the 2.65 rear end which could be a problem. Someone else on here says he has the .411 in his 2.5 and loves it but admits 1st is kinds a slow start. So I dunno.

keep us posted on which one you settle on- I could probably find a 2.3 at some point in the yards with one and would like to tackle this as well in the future.
take lots of pictures!

I bet the 411 works better on a turbo engine with good lowend grunt. Most of those 190d are small na. Would be nice to know what the 2.5turbo 190 came with. I too am doing this swap soon.

The 190D 2.5 Turbo came with an automatic and 2.56:1 rear screw. Mine would spin the tires from a stop on smooth dry cement with a healthy ALDA.

Pretty sure I have seen a 2.5turbo with 5 speed. Was this not a standard option?

Well removing the transmission is really not that big of a deal.. I may try one then swap out for the other. Same goes for the gas vs diesel flywheel, but only if there is a big difference in weight between the two. I will take plenty of pictures. First order of business is to get on the highway with the automatic and record engine speeds at various mph. Does anyone know how to compute engine speed with various gear ratio's? Seems like there should be a calculator online or something.
