drop-in turbo upgrade?
car: 1982 300sd on svo
i think my stock turbo is going out. so, is there a drop-in turbo upgrade? i don't want to mess with project type stuff with vgt. i just need this to work and get this car on the road but with a bit more performance. plans for this car for the future: IP tinkering, intercooler. i've got a different car as a project. tia

why do you say its the turbo?
no conversion? have you changed fuel filters? i dont think there is a easy drop in other the the stock one, get rebuilt or good used with core deposite? can have it done ina day, get a metal gasket for between the turbo and exhaust manifold

no conversion going on 4 years i think. it's all about the quality of the oil. i've added one of those clear glass cleanable filters inline.
there HAS to be some sort of upgrade that uses at least the same exhaust side housing as stock. i just need to know what to look for. help please?

You'll find plenty of turbos with the same flange as the turbo on there. Will the downpipe bolt up, maybe not. Will the crossover for the intake bolt up, probably not. So are you looking for absolutely no mods, or just the same inlet flange on the hot side?

If you're sure that your turbo is "going out" (and why do you think so?), just get another one from a junkyard or rebuild the one you have now. There are other turbos that you can install but ultimately, the limitation is the amount of fuel the IP can squirt into the cylinders. More air (via a beefed-up turbo) won't really do much good. Getting the car back on the road is fine but you're not going to get much more performance out of a 617 engine without serious work.

The stock turbo is not a limit to power. You'll have to replace the injection pump before considering a turbo larger than stock.

even with the rack limiter out you only need 14psi, stock turbo is good enough for that,
the IC will be good also if you do the limiter or just adjust the full load screw get a pyrometer first tho before any fuel IP pump changes only a Myna pump requires a new larger turbo, more fuel then more boost low end torque is hard on internals, vnt's are nice tho
