Are there any OM605's in the USA?

I find myself daydreaming about the possibility of replacing the OM602 Turbo engine with a 605 turbo engine in my '93 190E/D. (A '93 190E which has been retrofitted with a 2.5TD engine and 5-speed trans)

I know that there were never any vehicles sold in the US with the OM605 engine, but has anyone seen or heard of an individual importing just the engine to the US? Perhaps from a salvage dealer in Europe somewhere? Is it even possible?

Seeing Jeemu's (sp?) project really has my creative juices fired up.

Since the 6-cyl M103 fit in there, I think it'd probably be easier and cheaper to see if an OM606 fits.

Jetmugg 08-12-2010 12:23 PM

There are folks who have done the 603/606 swap into W201's, for sure, and they are certainly capable and powerful. In my mind's eye, the 6 cyl diesels seem to be a bit oversized/overweight for the nose of a W201. That's just my opinion, and I'm sure that others may disagree.

That being said - it doesn't cost anything to daydream, so right now I'm daydreaming about an OM605.

Agreed that balance is an important factor if you're going anything other than straight, and the 605 certainly can put down the power!

I dont know if it is the one

Its still a good deal if its an 87 under $1000.

Heartbreak

1 Attachment(s)
The FSM shows OM605 instructions
(If one's crafty enough to make it stand and deliver the goods)
Our North American EPC has the OM605 information [124.129]

It's almost as if Mercedes "Forgot" to import it to the USA.
(Rather, Than once again Tempting us with what we cannot have.)

Since the OM605 was never imported by Mercedes
(AND the concurrent "Federalization" costs Paid to EPA and DOT Consultants)
It is a Non-Conforming Engine In any chassis.

[Does the 25 Years rule apply to Engines as well as Chassis?]

The question on offer would be: Are the U.S.Authorities bright enough to pick
up on the fact that you'd be trying to bring one into CONUS?

Nod,Nod...Wink,Wink...Say,if the Head were shipped separately from the Block ?
[Two separate boxes of "Engine Parts"...Do you think HS (AKA Customs) knows where to look for MB engine #s and their significance?]

OM605

We (collectively) know that the OM605 MLS (Multiple Layer Steel) Head Gasket
can be CAREFULLY Drilled or Water Cut to be used in the OM602 Series Motor.

My Fantasy Question is:
How much, if ANY,difference between the OM605 and OM602 Long Blocks??????
[So much easier and less expensive to canoodle a Head in unescorted by the Block]

OR:
Would a n OM605 Head be Fulfilled living on top of an OM602 Long Block?

Jetmugg 08-12-2010 07:59 PM

Closer to home - I wonder if they were ever available in Canada.

It seems that the only references I see to the OM605 engines are normally in Europe - not Canada....???

That's good information about the head gasket and the possiblilty of using the 605 head on a 602 block. I did not know that, but it's very handy information.

I don't know if the chain to both camshafts can exist on the front of the 602, have never gone there. Much of the rest of the engine is a direct descendant.

Importing the engine for automotive use is one thing, importing it to use on a pump or generator, no longer a DOT issue.

Alastair 08-13-2010 01:42 PM

The Cam-Chain only drives Exhaust cam on the 605/6...

The Inlet cam is driven off the exhaust by a gear....

Ive heard it said but cannot confirm, the blocks are virtually the same on the 602 and the 605...

Jetmugg 08-13-2010 02:39 PM

I have heard the same about the blocks and heads - will have to check the Mercedes EPC looking for a diagram.

It "may" be possible to use an OM605 head on a 602 block, but at a minimum the 605 pistons would also be needed, plus the intake manifold would be nice, plus the exhaust and turbo....

At some point, trying to import a complete engine actually becomes more economical.

This is an exciting idea - perhaps the likelihood of success is low, but the possibility still exists, and if the right opportunity presents itself, I'd like to be ready to strike.

Just import it as a stationary engine for a power generation application.
You can change your mind once it gets to you.

Alastair 08-15-2010 07:07 AM

Hmm....

Thinking about this as a whole project inc. costings, not sure its such a great idea to use 605, or build up a 605 by combining parts--Just to save a little weight....

Yup, the 606 will be heavier with its extra pot over the 605, but it aint gonna be Hugely heavier.

In the US, the 606 is available--reasonably--easily I'm guessing. The extra costs of getting a whole 605 imported or building one from parts will probably be much more than getting a good 606 to start with!

If it were me, I would plumb for the 606 and use the dosh saved to alter suspension/wheels tyres accordingly if it proved necessary--I'm guessing with the extra power, you'll need to alter this lot anyway.

There have been guys who have fitted 603 and 606 to the W201 chassis, it may be an idea to search 'em out and see what they say as to how the handling was affected....
