Myna install in my 84 wagon

So I've changed the timing chain, adjusted the valves and installed the Myna pump. Linkage was an issue, and still is today, as well as the lift pump. The lift pump was a bit stiff and I needed to pull it apart, clean it and re-assemble in order for it to function as designed. Done without problems. The linkage from the right foot to the pump is made, but not perfected yet. I'm going to have to get another rod and use a die to cut the proper threads in order for the pump to reach the full amount of travel. After this I need to make any pump adjustments. Right now the VCV is leaking, so shifts are not optimal as they were with my modified MW pump. After a first day of install and a small amount of tweaking the results are good but there certainly is room for improvement. The amount of smoke at idle is a bit more than I'd like, but not enough to get a ticket. There is a bit more smoke at the low end when boost is building than I'd like also, but again not enough to get a ticket. I can control that to an extent with my foot. Above 2500 rpm the engine really wakes up and there seems to be no drop off in the rate of rising power all the way to the shift point. My modified MW gave nice low end and much improved mid and high end over stock settings, but the Myna is a different animal in the upper boost/rpm range. However with the timing at 25 degrees the engine now sounds like a 6BTa. The MW with stock 24 timing and AAZ injectors set at 150 bar were very very quiet. I like quiet, but like power more. I have a small injector leak, more tweaking and a new/better linkage rod to make and then report back. Pics and perhaps a short video soon.

Stock turbo set to up to 18 psi. The MW pump pushed it to up to 17 psi and the Myna will push it to 19. I may drop it back to 17 psi max. I do have a intercooler set up with a very short air path where the stock air filter cleaner used to be.

Of course the issue with a bigger turbo is that it will give more boost at higher rpm, but low rpm there is less boost. That's the basics with standard turbos- you choose a small one that spools quickly and gives low end power, or a big one that spool later and gives high end power. It's a compromise. The choices after that are a combination of turbos, a combination of superchargers + turbos, or a variable vane turbo, which you have to have a control system in place for. That's the step I am at now.

Video's
Engine at idle

Hard acceleration showing smoke out the back. It's obvious a VGT turbo will help cut down the smoke- which I do not want to blow out the back. I like speed- not smoke.

Hard acceleration showing speedo

Soft acceleration showing smoke out the back.

Too much smoke on soft acceleration, I think.

My 140 did that. I turned the fuel down to correct. Not as much acceleration speed, but I didn't blind the driver behind me any longer, which I thought was more important than a faster acceleration speed. 0-60 in 7 seconds in a 616 is impressive however and would be useable if you could do it without the smoke blinding the cars behind you. Do you think the Myna pump was worth the cost and benefit to have the pump adjusted in your case?

Sorry I linked the wrong video's to the statements. Now I switched them. I don't have a 616 and I don't get 0-60 in 7 seconds- I have a 617-95X in a 1984 w123 wagon.

Fuel problem

I've been playing with my 81' 300td - my first MB and diesel- for about six months now. The previous owner "tinkered" with it and managed to create a number of problems that were simple to fix but annoyingly difficult to find.
I'm about to change the injectors and valve seals. I am also thinking about rebuilding the turbo because I have the same problem with smoke at start up and hard acceleration.
From reading this thread, you indicate the problem is fuel related and rebuilding the turbo with adjusting the IP may eliminate the problem. Is this correct?

No- and my wagon has many changes that yours does not have. You need to read many threads here and decide what you want from your wagon and move forward from there. My IP is not stock, and I have a underhood intercooler with a altered exhaust among other things.

What you or the previous owner has done to the car would be a thread on its own, not to ask here in this one.

You're right. I looked at other threads and discovered that I'm doing is an "Italian Tune-Up". What I'm seeing out of the tail pipe is normal under conditions I discribed.
