Update

Just figured post a update for all the 240 drivers out there that have been paying attention. Still driving my 240d daily w/ 22 psi max boost, tc in around 6 turns, delivery valve holders maxed out, high rpm screw in all the way without it's lock nut, manual fan removed, trans line pressure bumped up, and straight piped exhaust. Have yet to have any issues with anything (unless you consider excessive smoke pre-boost and a bit under boost a issue) it has 260k on the clock and still starts reliably when cold and takes me everywhere i ask it to. Still waiting for something to break . One of these days when i get around to it im going to pull my injectors, rebuild, raise pop pressure, install larger nozzles, and open the prechambers, so when that happens maybe ill do a before and after accel video or something. Financial issues prevented dyno'ing yet but that is also in the near future.

yeah yeah, rub it in.... we all drive slow cars I know.
I'll be following your progress and updates.
how's fuel mileage? what are the 0-60 times down to now? glad none of the dire precictions FI listed are coming true.

josha37 03-14-2011 01:46 PM

I dont know what it gets for fuel economy i never bother to fill it up and check but it seems awesome. seems like ten bucks (about 3 gallons around here) will get me around for a week or so and i drive quite a bit. I know thats not very scientific but if i dont beat on it (which is rare) then it doesnt seem any different than it was stock. Last 0-60 was a little over 9 seconds on a stop watch, did 10 something on a video (its on here somewhere). Not rubbing it any, just kinda wanted everyone to know it didnt fail in a catastrophic fashin a couple weeks in. :D

here are a pair of pictures for all the people that wont to see what i have made (not sure why... im a tech not a welder )

... words fail me.
glad it works. wow.
please don't cut up your PC's...

vstech 03-21-2011 10:52 AM

I'd actually like to see some better pictures. maybe take some in the daylight, or with a better camera?

josha37 03-21-2011 01:12 PM

It was day light, and the one on my camera is the only camera i have, what do you want to see better? I built it all in about twenty minutes with scrap exhaust tubing i had under my tool box and a free turbo in my bottom drawer, but it works :D I hated the way i had to make the pair of ninetys where it hooks up to the exhaust manifold but i seems to have worked fine i dont have boost lag like i thought i would.

winmutt 03-21-2011 02:54 PM

With a bend like that I have to wonder what your EGP is like.

josha37 03-21-2011 03:15 PM

Yea i wondered for a while... but it works so i quit caring :)

josha37 04-22-2011 01:59 AM

so... cut my dv's and WOW! idle is fair im going to fix it tomorrow (is getting kinda late) but WOW! sorry had to share i kinda like having a 240d that spins its tires when it shifts into second :ukliam3: And i would also like to appologize to everyone for doing everything they tell me not to.

How is the smoke?

We were chirping the tires in the 10mm 300d until the trans grenaded. We got about 200 miles of hard shifting before the trans protested.

As for where I have been; I've been really busy and am kind of sowered on the hole forum pissing match environment. Maybe it is just the winter blaas talking.

You are proving the nay sayers wrong about how much abuse the 616 will tolerate. Even I am impressed!

josha37 04-22-2011 03:46 PM

the smoke was bad pre boost before, now i have to go 1/2 throttle until boost builds or it chokes out and smokes REALLY bad. so it just takes a little dilligence to keep the emissions under control, or not ;) . but now it smokes a bit under boost it is SO much faster. did a 0-60 this morning of 10 seconds ill post the video later, so cut dv's was worth 2 seconds 0-60 for me. yea we'll see how that poor 250k mile old trans holds up :). Good to see your atleast checking in on us everyonce and a while i think i need a good babysitter...

Babysitter!..... Ha!... Remember it is all about my entertainment! LOL

I would love to know what your EGTs are. It would be interesting to see what it is actually tolerating, vrs what the common excepted temps.

Go forth my good man!

PS. You would really benefit from an ALDA.

josha37 04-22-2011 06:29 PM

yes i would like to have a alda, but as usual im not buying one :). egts would be interesting maybe scary? now if only i could smooth the idle out a little... exhaust sounds MEAN though. Check this out maybe it will give you a idea of how much fuel there is.. if i power break it power climbs until right past 1/2 throttle and it starts to spin the tires but if you continue it begins to bog down and billow black/grey smoke. :P if only it made boost sooner... i think it takes me as long to go 0-10 as it does to go 10-60 mph

47dodge 04-22-2011 06:47 PM

I have not done anything to improve power beyond the new intake manifold. That helped a lot. Been chasing oil leaks lately. Need to get that under control. The underside of the car is coated with oil, good rust proofing though....

My egts I try to hold to 1250, but will let climb to 1350 or so for up to about 15 seconds. Someone else needs to test the limit......

josha37 04-22-2011 06:52 PM

yea... i just kinda quit looking at my oil leaks and started parking off pavement , i just keep telling myself that IF it survives and continues doing what it does best AND i can find a way to limit the smoke a bit i WILL be rebuilding it to transplant it into a mini truck (samari or tracker) for a wheeling toy, so if all things go well someday it wont leak any more oil. now if i could only get my hands on a prechamber puller... oh and dodge, if my experience is worth anything these engines will take whatever you intend to or feel comftorable (or not comftorable) throwing at them.

enjoy!! turn your speakers on :)

mwahahaha

josha37 04-24-2011 11:11 PM

thats wierd.. it was all homemade, go figure

josha37 04-24-2011 11:46 PM

ugh.. you dont get it.. if you would have been following the story i got it for 50 bucks, and have just been pushing it to find the breaking point. i think it cost me more to register it...

mike-81-240d 05-12-2011 01:27 AM

Where in WA are you?

josha37 05-12-2011 01:51 AM

Bellingham

josha37 05-12-2011 01:55 AM

i should probably tell everyone a little story. i work 4 days on 4 days off and i dont drive my car on my 4 days on.. so after sitting for four days i got in the benz and it didnt start :veryangry:. Messed with it a bit and got it to run for a bit but ended up just having my boss load it on a flat bed and take it to the salvage yard. Got $400 for my $50 car and had a great time with everyone on here and had a fun toy for about 9 ish months.

Joseph_Conrad 05-12-2011 02:20 AM

Wow, easy come, easy go, eh?

josha37 05-12-2011 02:23 AM

I had been living with excessive blow by and low compression since i got it... not taking me home after work was the last straw :hanged:

Joseph_Conrad 05-12-2011 02:27 AM

Yeah, that makes sense. They're fun cars though...

josha37 05-12-2011 02:28 AM

Had a ton of fun and used it as a test bed to help my buddy figure out what works and what doesnt for his 617

Stretch 05-12-2011 03:00 AM

If you have to make a guess - what do you think went wrong? Did something break?

mike-81-240d 05-13-2011 12:25 AM

Oh boy.

josha37 05-13-2011 12:32 AM

as far as me and 616 could work out it was low compression from stuck/warn rings, the valves didnt sink so as far as we can tell the factory valves are up to the task of abuse. It has been like this for a long time, if it didnt start at first it was like it was "flooded" and wouldnt start til it sat for a long time. Just tired of the routine :) It ran great when i parked it but the battery was a bit low when i went back which just led me down the path of failure, it probably didnt help that i shut it down hot after rallying it in the field behind the shop and doing donuts for 10 minutes at wot/redline ;).

So your message is you can modify the heck out of these engines and if you behave you probably won't break 'em?

josha37 05-13-2011 03:30 PM

 im not allowed to say anything of that nature, but my pos unmaintained car did just fine for a long time. ended up just being to worn out to continue.. ran perfect all the way up until the last time i parked it.
