Buy a OM606 motor or for the same money have a om617 fuel pump modded?
Thats what i need to figure out as i have a great deal on a cherry om606.
its just i know the om617s are great and if the beefed up one dies i can always get a drop in replacement motor but not the other way around for the om606 motor......

To do what?
If you're considering installing it in a 123 car, you'll need a lot more than just the engine (transmission, custom engine mounts / driveshaft / exhaust / etc.). The modified 617 will take a lot of money to have the same power as the stock 606 turbo, and the 606 turbo will do it quietly, more efficiently, and without smoke. Pros and cons to both.

I have a good trans for it and mechanical ip from a 603 all the othere stuff is easy. Just if the motor goes I'm screwed where as 617s are a dime a dozen still out here.

These engines are tough, and a 606 at or near stock (200hp-ish) power will be hard to hurt.
I'm not a 61x fan, never was, and overboosting one will hurt its dependability so why not start with the 606 and have some real bragging rights? It's fun to have people react with surprise when you tell them that your quiet, clean, and powerful car is a diesel.

#22 head (and all above #15 IIRC) are set up with a 5* angle on the injectors to improve mixing.
If the original/early prechambers are installed in the head, the original vertical injection is retained. Oblique injection is an additional investment in the new head in new pre-chambers, new injectors, new glow-plugs, and new injector lines.

I vote for the 606. You can make that old tractor engine pull harder, but it will still be a tractor engine. ^_^
