education please

I was wondering if there is a how to thread on injection timing etc? What is this rack people keep talking about and will modifying it make my 240d feel like a super heavy old car instead of a tractor with a flat tire?

Dont get me wrong - I like to see a line of red faced people behind me on the freeway - but ... well - you've driven a 240d right?

The rack is inside the injection pump. Not sure on your mechanical ability, but yes adjusting it can give more power. Some take the rack limiter out. I would keep it in, and just adjust it. There are a number of things in the ip that can be done, it really needs to be done carefully, as things can get messed up in a hurry. Best to do it under the instruction of someone experianced. If you get serious about modifications you need an egt gauge. Also be sure all the basic maintenance has been done , including checking throttle linkages, and fuel pressure.

Injection timing , use the search feature on this site and you should find plenty. Same with the rack limiter.

Here are some pictures of the inside of the ip and general instructions. careful there are some errors in the instructions. Again this is a wonderful oppertunity to make a real mess of things. So only go in if you have real good mechanical ability, and do only one thing at a time, recording everything you do, so you can reverse if need be.

There is a post recently where a fellow removed the rack limiter and messed it up, I never did see the conclusion to it.

I'm fairly mechanically enclined - but I'm no diesel mechanic. I think I'll leave this one alone and try something else.

Do it to a spare IP, keep the original tamper free as a spare.

Unless you have a forced induction system adding more fuel (as this modification will do) will not do anything but add smoke to the exhaust. You'll need more air to burn the fuel and a NA engine cannot add more air.

I have to differ with that. the 616 will take more fuel, and make more power. Enough to be noticeable. Stock I was able to make 40 mph in third on a mountain grade, on the same grade with ip adjustments only I made 50 in third. With other mods now I make mid 50's in fourth. No turbo.

Clearly Mercedes has tuned it very conservatively most likely for emissions. There is a lot left on the table.
