Strengthening the 722.6 to handle more torque

I was thinking of doing a diesel build once I acquire my E300. The OM606 is a strong platform that can handle at least 500HP stock, but the amounts of torque being put out would destroy the transmission. I am trying to think of ways to mod and strengthen the 722.6 to handle a lot of torque. Anyone done this or heard of it?

That would be called a 722.3XX Transmission.

If it'll bolt up to the OM606.

Why exert extra effort when Stuttgart has already
"Gone Down that Road,for you"?

I've heard of it. Turbobandit say they do it => the bloke who started this thread =>

I don't think there is all that much that can be done with the brake bands (may be a different friction material?) but I think one trick is to increase the friction area in the clutches by introducing more friction plates and stators.

Best to check with them

These guys (And the Finns and Swedes)

Are the Envelope Pushers on this front:

BEST TRANSMISSION???

Excerpt from Petar:
"6 speed mercedes has been proven up to 450Hp, 750 Nm by hansebanger.
722.6 is pretty much indestructible when built properly, will hold in excess of 1000 Nm."

From memory:

'97 and up already have this transmission but there are a couple versions. I believe the desirable one is from the S600 or it's AMG variants. Apparently, they have certain beefed up internals but I'm not sure which.

They use a 722.6 in a CL65 which has about 740ft/lbs torque. You're thinking that your car will make more?

They also continued to use the 722.6 in the SLR McLaren and all the AMG cars with 5.4 liter supercharged V8.

Why do you think it can't handle the torque of your diesel?

I don't think the OP has had the chance to think that far ahead yet

I wonder how easy it would be to find a 722.633 or a 722.636 or a 722.643 or a 722.649 though - or if they would fit an OM606

That's the 6-speed from the SLK that he is using. I won't be using a manual, but a 5-speed automatic. I like what I see from that post. I wished I could drop in a 722.3, but that's unfortunately too much work I'm not really into. Plus I like the 722.6 a lot more than the old 722.3s. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make this auto box handle a lot of torque. Whatever the cost.

I know everybody mentions the 722.6 in the CL65, or the SLR McLaren but each 722.6 is not the same by all means. They are all geared completely differently than the diesel transmission. It might however be a decent idea to look into to see if I could use the friction plates from these transmissions and other internal parts.

As a street car, I still want to drive it. I know the torque I'll be putting out will destroy the diesel trans.. I just don't think the 722.6 for a diesel could handle anything over 400NM of torque for a long period of time.

Any 722.6 from a V8 Mercedes will be able to handle anything that you throw at it.
