Holset HY30 on 603

Almost done. All I have to do is sort out the exhaust and get the right size hose for the oil drain. As you can see this would be a drop in for a 602.

My t3/t25 adapter and the silly U tube:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/...1&d=1316002682
On the bottom I have 4x10mm socket caps counter sunk and ground flat. On the top I have 2x8mm socket caps per side. One is missing because I managed to break off the tap into the adapter on the missing hole. I tried to drill it out without any success (too hard). If I were to do this adapter again, I would use 1x8mm socket caps on each side and then 1x6mm socket cap on top and bottom. I also used a bit that was too larger on the 10mm socket caps, I would use a smaller (1/2"?) bit and just grind the cap thinner like I did on the 8mm socket caps. This was the first time I have ever drilled into any kind of serious metal, I think it came out quite well.

As you can see the compressor outlet aligns quite nicely with the stock cross over tube. All I had to do was grind down the mount bolt on the crossover tube to make it round.

I had the stock mb oil line modified to fit the stock holeset oil line by these guys http://www.hydraulic-supply.com/html/location/mableton.htm. They charged a nominal $20 to flare the metric tube to fit the standard sized adapter and braze the end on. Really the value in this job was the comedy show these guys put on, they are like an old married couple and had me crying I was laughing so hard. I did take the line to 2 other places first that refused to do it because it was metric. These guys rock and are really down with the racing mod spirit.

Obviously I am not quite finished yet. More on this here :http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/Thread-My-1987-300D?page=2

ITS ALIVE!!!! I say that in all caps because I cannot hear anymore. LOL Still have to sort out the gap in the exhaust. Used the air filter setup from the W123. Changed oil and fuel filters as well. I will take pics in AM, any suggestions on how to fix the exhaust, even temporarily so I can drive it some where would be appreciated.

Pics!

Reused airfilter from 617, if everything works out I will be getting a new filter. As you can see the stock air tube from manifold almost fits. I think I am going to carve the receiver out of the stock intake hose and attach it to the black tube (notice the electricians tape covering the hole I had used on the 617).

Anyone know what the resistance on a K type thermocoupler should be? It was around 10ohms, I am hoping its still good after I accidently ground the starter through the shielding on the thermcoupler wire (lots of smoke).
I really think the hydraulic shop did a good job on the fitting there!

EGT probe. Tonight I am going to fire up the Arduino/Android app I wrote for this and see if everything works.

The intake to charge air coupling is a bit of a kludge right now. Thinking about machining the lip off the turbo and then modifying the crossover tube for better fitting. Pretty sure this wont hold under boost.

So much more room without the MAF. I think with some judicial hammering I may be able to refit the sound wall back in there.

The GAP! Not sure what I am going to do about this. I need a temporary solution to do some test drives and get the car to the muffler shop. Suggestions?
I imagine a new downpipe is going to be required in which case I might as well do a whole new exhaust....

Breather line looks real close to the turbo inlet. I hear oil droplets will erode hi speed turbo surfaces by impact.

Is this a stand-alone mod, or was it done to support previous pump modifications. Your comment about this turbo being a "drop in" for a 602 has me interested. I have a 602 Turbo engine that I've been daydreaming about getting on a performance program.

Its not actually hooked up yet. The hole is in the bend, covered by tape. I will check out the stock setup.

Stand alone. Pump mods to come.

I say its a drop in because of the t25 flange. Also because the outlet is the same size as the stock exhaust.

Popped through some silicone last night :(

It appears the HY25W is probably the best suited for the 602. 54mm compressor exducer, t25 housing, 2.5" exhaust.

Thanks for the info regarding the HY25W. I'll start keeping my eyes open for one. Would there be any benefit to switching the turbo by itself? I'm interested in improving the performance of this car, but want to understand the logical progression of improving the performance.

I've read this forum and the STD forum quite a bit, but there are still a lot of details regarding the most logical sequence of events to improve performance on a mild budget.

I know there is some development work going on with respect to a USA source of pump modifiers, but I haven't seen anything reliable or concrete yet.

If swapping the turbo without any internal pump modifications will yield results, I'd be happy to do so. I'd also be willing to keep my eyes open for one of these turbos to have "on the shelf".

Thanks,

SteveM.

Great job, keep up the progress!

Good questions. Holset was generally considered to be about 10years ahead of Garrett when our cars were made, this is no longer the case. The compressor wheels tend to be generally the same configurations however if you look at the turbine wheels you can see they are quite different. I think the only way to know for sure is to try!

Some musings from other sites:
Holset turbos VS Garrett turbos - Columbus DSM Forums
Quote:

•Holset's don't spool slow. They spool faster than their garrett or mitsubishi counterparts. Diesel exhaust is cold and slow moving.
•The holset turbine wheel is a work of art. It has been shown to flow very well in a very small turbine housing. For example the hx40 turbine wheel in the small .55 ar bep bolton housing flows as much as a garrett gt35r turbine wheel in a larger .63 ar garrett t3 turbine housing. The hx40 with this configuration spools about 500rpms faster! You can upgrade to the .70 a/r BEP t3 turbine housing and have the same or slightly faster spool speed as the above gt35r with ALOT more flow per psi and consequently more horsepower per psi. This makes for VERY good pumpgas numbers.
•Holset patented map width enhancement. They do not have extended tip technology, but there compressors show more efficiency than their garrett or mitsubishi counterpart.
•They have superback technology witch leads to VERY, VERY durable compressors. The are designed to be overworked and underpaid.
•There are discrepancies all over the web concerning the compressor maps. Take what you hear/read with a grain of salt and a shot of tequila, and the worm.
•The holset is fine with stock 4g63 oil pressure from the oil filter housing. If you have no b shafts, you'll need a restrictor. The drain line is a garret bolt pattern. The feed line is different for different turbos
At this point I am going to drive for a few more weeks and look for tell tale signs of leaks on the exhaust side around the adapter.
