'87 300SDL//Turbo Check.....

Just getting used to my recent purchase--'87 300SDL--and am wondering how to test the operation of the turbo.

On my 300SD, I could hear the turbo spool up & feel the acceleration ......on the SDL, I can't really hear or feel anything. My mpg is consistently at 26 per gallon and acceleration to 60mph (if I remember right from a couple weeks ago) was in the 18 sec range.

Thoughts?

Adjust your linkages and check your filters first :)

Okay....linkages and filters are good. Just wondering how to tell if the turbo is working properly.

Clean the line from the manifold to the ALDA atop the IP. Clean the fitting on the manifold (takes a 12mm wrench but go gently because it'll break if overtightened) and the overboost protection solenoid. I blast everything with brake parts cleaner.

The simplest way to tell if your turbo is working is to hook up a boost gauge, even a temporarily mounted one tucked under the wiper, and go for a drive watching it.

You should see full swing by 3000 rpm under some load. If you are, your turbo is working. If you don't get the pressure you'd like, there could be many reasons, not just the turbo.
