Why do you want it to smoke more??? the black smoke is unburnt fuel $$$$$ going out your tail pipe.

I don`t know where you live, but in some cities you can get a hefty fine for blowing out smoke.

Iam not sure how to turn it up.

Here is this thread running now on the same idea.

this sounds like you want a performance increase in your car.
I think I'll move the thread to the performance section. better discussion there, as most replies on this end will be on keeping it stock.

Bosch M and Mw pump theory

vstech, any way we can get this as a sticky in the performance section?

47dodge 11-10-2011 06:37 PM

what are the errors? Lance is that you?

yankneck696 11-10-2011 08:33 PM

Please report the errors in that compilation. Quite a few people have used it successfully as compared to another "IP tuning" thread that others have had issues with. I have read the arguments for both articles/threads & the "Theory" thread is one that can help the basicly mechanicly minded person to understand & tune their IP more confidently. This is all in my opinion.

So, please enlighten us in an intelligent discussion.

... naughty naughty Mr. A....

Darn.... I personally would like to have an intelligent debate about the 2 different articles. I wonder if the 2 authors could ever get together & hash it out civil like.... Oh well, (obvious needling omitted for safety sake)...
I actually signed up to this site just for that issue.
It's just a shame that 1 individual needs to bash the other with no real facts.
The Theory article is just a masterpiece & all thanks go to the author who has been bashed hard, but still spent the time to comlipate all of that wonderful info for us all to learn from.
If the other article writer could just relax & treat people decently, we could use both of their wealths of information to get the full picture of M & MW IPs.

Oh well, I can fantasize, right?

I feel dirty...:P

yankneck696 11-11-2011 05:32 PM

616, the only time you are dirty is when you have your fingers in a tight oily crevice, adjusting it.... That's a good thing !!! Again, Thankyou for all you have done for the community !!!

Ed-
There is really not much use in fiddling with a non turbo injection pump to get more power, as you need more air to burn the extra fuel. You may be able to get another 5-7 HP if you "turn up" the 616 IP and everything else is already in tip top running condition. More likely you'll get 1-4 more HP. While that is 10% at the top end and closer to under 5% at the bottom end, the altering of the 616 IP is really no different than the altering of the 617 IP. If you can read up on those IP altering techniques then the you have the basics for the 616. Some will tell you need to be a bosch bench or be a bosch technician, but that is clearly false. You can take the IP off and adjust the insides moderately and not have a complex operation. You do need to understand that adjustments need to be done incrementally and slowly. With a non forced induction diesel your choices of upping the performance are severely limited however.

I have seen about a 25-30% improvement on my 616, without adding a turbo. Ip adjustments gave about half of that. I posted some figures at the end of the "eeking out more on a 240" thread. So yes ip adjustments are a good start. If you get aggressive then more air will be needed. Either a turbo, or a differant intake and exhaust. Turbo will of course be the ultimate. I still think I have another 5-10 more if I get the uprated cam, and maybe make a set of headers. I would guess about 85 -90 hp then. Bigger elements will help to, no real idea of what hp increase that will give. Perhaps you may see this as severely limited. It would really depend on your goals. However I am pleased so far.

Really you are one person, one car and have made multiple adjustments; this is not easily able to be replicated- which means your data is questionable. Your one test seems to be climbing a hill and what speed your speedo says at some place on the hill on different dates. I certainly hope you agree this is not a reliable test for HP increases.
This thread/conversation is related to the IP aspect of the 616- which I've said could result is as much as 10% more HP (meaning 5-7 HP)- and that is just a educated guess. Changing the interior settings of the IP could also result in serious engine damage or a engine which blows itself up quickly or over time.
Until you come up with data such as dyno testing after each modification or extensive 0-X testing with as few other changes besides the one modification your results will always be suspect. Of course we all (myself included) salute your gumption and gusto to push the envelope on the 616, you must note that in order to claim X or Y you must have the proper data to back up up claims.

... my poor 240 was probably damaged to start out but i added 15 mph to my top speed, cut a few seconds off my 0-60, and greatly improved my end of on-ramp speed pre turbo on a 240d just by modifing pump settings. Having said that boost is increadibly important if you actually want to keep up with traffic. But saying all you will get is 10% seems rather conservative to me.
