I think someone beat you to it

I was actually trying to find the pic of the w123 300td grafted onto a Nissan 4x4 chassis that a guy I knew from the old mbz.org list had. He used it as a daily driver in northern california. The guy who built it had also done at least one Volvo 245.

But I found this:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/open-discussion/159298-redneck-mercedes.html

And THIS:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/edheil/3229571125/
(Which I must admit I like)

Ah, finally found it, on the blog of the guy who built it....

Looks like a Euro NA OM617, and that pan probably isn't optimal given that it appears to be all aluminum. Typically these engines use a steel bottom pan that would be better for off-roading. Personally, I would hold out for a turbo 617 engine

yeah, totally an N/A engine. Note the lack of an ALDA.

ok ... today i made the adapter and bolted the engine to tranny ..

and i am not proud of this last pic ... start hole is bigger than i planed on making it ..,. plasma would not cut through the ribs .. so i had to go around them ... need to get some shorter starter bolts ...

was able to fix some of the pics on this page ...

here is more progress ..

and i threw the cab back on it to test the tranny and clutch .. seems to work good . not lacking any power but it doesnt weigh anything either ..

next step is to pull cab . install new clutch , and start stripping the car body .

Well it fits! Is there still a big hole in the transmission casing near to the starter?

Oh I thought you might be able to tack (weld) a nut to the other side of the adapter plate you made and then you've got a similar to stock fixing situation.
