Cranking and cranking and ...
Is it just me or does it take FOREVER to bleed a new pump?

Just you.
Can you hook up an inline pump to push the fuel to the pump, instead of the pump trying to dry prime itself? Or dump some fuel down the return line? I made a drill pump from a $20 chevy oil pump and some brass fittings, something like that might speed things up

assuming you have fuel to the pump,
I have found that it speeds up the process if you put your fingers over the DV holders (lines off the pump of course), so your fingers act as a check valve. You will feel each stroke of the element as air pressure is generated and leaks past each finger. Once fuel is spurting out of each DV holder, you can put the lines on and bleed them at the injectors. |

Ya I left all the lines loose. After about 6 times of running the battery dead I finally got fuel. Now my idle is all crappy. Lots of blue smoke, misses... Tried retiming a few times over the weekend. Gonna move the pump in and out today and see if I can find the right spot...
Good news is that in 3rd gear only my slipping clutch, lack of EGT and 12" tires keep me from escaping the clutches of earths gravity.

You might have a look at your valve clearance too.

Ah but an 87 has hydraulics.
On a side note I am getting some other projects done to make SWMBO happy so I can pull the engine and go for a redneck rebuild (hone and rings, maybe new rod bearings).

Yes, too well. Dumping so much fuel that (really) low compression on #1 and #3 were making for entirely too much smoke, even with the ALDA all the way in. Unhooking #1 and #3 made smoke go away. 400kish on the engine, this was not a surprise after I saw the wavy cylinder walls.
