I pulled the engine on my 05 CDI and took it down to the block. Suggestions for mprovement. I was thinking internally.

I doubt that there is very much you can do internally, Mercedes isn't known for leaving much on the table with their engine designs. That said, I'd look into ceramic coating the piston crowns, combustion chamber, and valves, assuming Mercedes hasn't already given them a coating from the factory. If uncoated then you may pick up a couple % efficiency from coating them.

Balance and polish the rods. balance the pistons, wrist pins, caps, bolts, etc. Get the crank balanced. Port the head and manifolds, and polish the exhaust side. CC and polish the combustion chambers, and have it coated. If it's a flat head like the 617 cc the pistons
Coating the pistons, combustion chamber, manifolds, etc. will give you some gains. Maybe a windage tray if the oil pan doesn't have one stock?

Picture
I could take a picture but I could not get it onto this website. I can break an engine down in a hour or two but putting picture on here, NO. Besides it is not pretty.
Turns out all of the cylinders are marred and two rods are bad and two pistons are bad. Oversized slugs are $295 each and rods are $220. I considered 6.0 pistons from a ford with custom Rods but they are just to big at 95 mm where mine are 88 mm. Any ideas on where to get a good long block, or short block or used pistons? |

May I ask how many miles were on the engine and what caused the rod and piston damage pls?

OIL
It was more like sludge. 15k miles is to many and I think the guy before did not change the oil very often. Some times life gets in the way an you froget when the last time you changed you oil was.
I found long block for $2900 if I purchase that I will have spare parts. If I buy 6 pistons $300 each and two rod. $200 each It would be like a new engine. Similar in price. Which one would you choose? I have a call into RennTech one of the original AMG guys to see what he thinks about performance modifications. I do know that Custom made Titanium Rods and Pistons would be about $5000. Bigger turbo, computer tuning, I could spend $10k in parts that I would still have to put together and redesign the air intake and make the bigger intercooler fit.. The local tuner said it would make 500HP and turn 6k rpm. But he was just guessing. I wonder if the car could handle 750 foot pounds. That will never happen but if was fun talking to the guy. |

I would measure everything, and if the remaining pistons/rods are OK I would just buy the parts needed. $300/piston seems high, you should contact a custom piston place.
Plus, if you rebuild it yourself you *know* it is good. I've heard of people getting 400-500hp from 606s, so you ought to be able to get that from a newer engine.
