OM603 Turbo Identification

Guess this is more of a "Clarification" as I cant see the wastegate on the bottom like the KKK. All I've read Is the Garrett has a "rubber wastegate hose". Should it be located on the front like this? And if so what are some specifics on this? Will I need a boost controller? I don't see a adjustment nut/allen like described for the KKK.

Also what would be a good boost level for the "turned up" IP? 13.5 psi? 15 maybe?

Thanks in advance. Just got this car last night, runs amazingly, just want more "oomph" before it goes into an overweight all-wheel-drive pig of a Land Rover!

KKK's have a funny looking wastegate with internal rod garrets are different. i believe you have a garrett t3 could you get another pic? Here is a shot of a KKK. How much do you know about diesel? A 603 is quite fast but fuel is more an issue than boost. Stock boost is around 14 iirc. Not much difference between 13-15psi anything past that just makes excess heat. Reaserch "ip full load adjustment" for real gains.

Yeah i dont see the wastegate undr the manifold. ill take a pic with my actual camera not the phone. and yeah i planned on the full load adjustment, just thought it might need alittle more air with the fuel.

You will need a boost gauge to tell for sure most of those garret wastegates start to sag and get loose after all these years. 12 going to 14 psi you might not feel much but when i fixed mine from 4 to 14 now that i could really feel! I love my 602 but that 603 was fast!

That was my thought. i got a guage, gonna find out this weekend. if it is low, are these wasregates adjustable internally? Or just rebuild it with new spring? Or will it just need replaced? Thanks guys, sorry for all the questions but this is my first turbo car

On the Garret turbo you can adjust the wastegate rod length to change the boost pressure a bit.

See what boost it's making now. Just adding more air won't make it any faster unless you turn up the fuel too.

So the guage would just "T" off the vacuum line that goes to the top "canister" in my photo there? (is that the actual wastegate or the one under it?)

And if thats the wastegate its safe to assume the bolt/nut there is where to adjust the rod length if boost has crept off?

Thanks again, sorry im a noob about turbo systems

A better place to put the T is the little nipple on the intake manifold that feeds the transmission modulator and ALDA on the injection pump.

Note that the think plastic vacuum lines and change over valves can get plugged with soot which will block boost going to the ALDA, so the pump will never enrich when boost comes up and the car will be slow. If the pump does not enrich the turbo also will not make full boost.

Ok i see now thats an egr of some kind. so its the bottom, and the larger hose with spring clamp should operate the guage?

And i see the rod going down with some linkage connected, brief walkthrough on adjusting? Will the rod itself adjust, or do u adjust linkage?

Eeyup thats about how mine looked when i pulled it, might want to pull the manifold and clean it as well that soot combines with blowby oil and makes nasty tar gak. I made a similar plate but I tapped my waste-gate line in the center to make it look important, NC only has visual inspections on diesels so if it looks stock-ish=no questions. Ever get a good boost reading?

Yeah. almost eliminated itself! No no reading yet. but thats just power braking in driveway! (still waiting on title to drive damn thing) that should build boost tho? wouldnt that simulate essentially the equivelent of chaining an immovable object behind it?
