96 e300 turbo conversion

ok so I just bought a turbo and manifold from a 99 e330 and im going to swap it onto my 96 but im confused on how to hook up the wastegate to vacuum.

Best deal is probably to go to a pressure operated waste gate, eliminates alot of complication. Do a search here lots of info on this mod.

oldsinner111 11-06-2014 06:51 AM

my understanding is,a line runs from intake manifold. It actually senses boost pressure.

KarTek 11-06-2014 09:36 AM

Don't screw with the vacuum controlled wastegate. It's intended for a vacuum transducer and computer control. Just swap in a standard pressure controlled wastegate.

As for a source, I would say maybe a T3 wastegate. It's probably going to take some modification but there may be a direct bolt on. I've never researched it thoroughly.

You'll also need a pump off a later car with 6mm elements to get the performance of the turbo car otherwise you're wasting your time adding the turbo.

Going a different route . Taking a turbo from a 94.5-97 7.3 powerstroke and putting it on the manifold. No waste gate and is bigger than the stock 99 om606 turbo I have and should boost great.

tjts1 11-21-2015 10:50 PM

Great. What about fuel?

KarTek 11-23-2015 01:18 PM

Powerstroke turbos are also pedestal mount so you can't just mount them by a flange.

jordon001 11-25-2015 09:03 AM

Stock fuel for now. Guy I seen use a hx40 from a 5.9 Cummings was hitting 15lbs of boost no problem. And as for the pedestal I know all about it I know my way around a 7.3 and 6.4 powerstroke quite well. But He feed and return for oil are on the bottom of the center cateidge and I'm just going to to tap the holes and put fittings In it.

tjts1 11-25-2015 11:59 AM

So that's the point of turbocharging with stock fuel. It'll only make the car slower.

jordon001 11-25-2015 02:28 PM

The car does 0-60 in like 20 seconds. Literally slowest car I've driven.

tjts1 11-26-2015 03:34 PM

While these non turbo cars are slow, 20sec is far slower than spec. I would start by cleaning out the intake manifold. It's likely plugged up with soot and oil.

Pumping more air into the engine without additional fuel will simply make car even slower.

jake12tech 11-29-2015 03:18 PM

It's about a thousand times easier to start with a turbo model instead of a non-turbo model. It saves about twice the work. I just don't understand.

jordon001 11-30-2015 09:01 PM

I've already done that when I first bought the car. Put an cold air intake on it, egr delete and I took manifold off and cleaned all the spot and oil out. Everything has been done just needs a turbo.

shertex 12-03-2015 02:33 PM

Seems like there has to be something going on other then the lack of a turbo to account for 20 seconds… That's really slow.

I hope you also bought the connecting rods. The n/a rods look like toothpicks compared to the om606 turbo rods. I know others have turbo'd the n/a bottom end, but personally I wouldnt.
