Need help installing new starter in 87 300TD
The starter in my 87 300TD is completely dead. Pulld it out and took it to an electrical shop to see if it could be rebuilt. Nope. So I bought a new one, which is much larger than the one I pulled out. Old one was not stock.
My problem is that I can not get the new one in place. I can get it almost into place, but the steering box and the engine mount are in the way. I really don't want to move either one of those. Any tips or suggestions to make it fit in place?

I think you need to turn the steering all the way to one side or the other to get the room, and then insert so that the toothy end is last up into the cavity. Rotate around to position, strong hands and forearms help.
I've done this several times, so it IS possible.
