1995 E300D Exhaust Modifications

Downside to opening the exhaust on a 1995 E300D?

Remove the converter, and install a 'glass pack' muffler...

thx.

Hi,

I would suggest a diesel designed muffler like an aeroturbine rather then a glass pack which can become clogged with soot.

Another option is to run open pipe but the NA '95 will not have the best sound without a turbo to mitigate the noise.

Bad idea as said it will plug up!
Also, does your state has a smog inspection program?!

no smog inspection, in that it's a 20-yr old vehicle.
and, can get antique tags.
if a glass-pak won't work re:soot, maybe that aeroturbine might...

looking for knowledge or advice on downside to the motor without the backpressure of the cat or muffler.

I don't have one on my diesel, but the turbo acts as a muffler.Maybe a low resrictive turbo type muffler would help with power. These old diesels exhaust do fill up with soot, causing exhaust to weigh more.

the E300D without its oxidation catalyser in the exhaust will sound like a fart can on a civic at high rpm, it will drone at highway speeds to the point of becoming a headache.

as mentioned you can place a aeroturbine type resonator in place of it to make it quiet again, but you need to have both mufflers in place too.

What's the up side? It's louder- and to me that is not an upside. Unless your exhaust is plugged opening up the exhaust will have no upside. Now if you have a turbo charged diesel the situation is completely different.

Don't have the the cat on the 97 om606 NA. It doesn't sound like a fart can and it doesn't drone at any RPM. The rest of the exhaust is stock, previous owner did it.

Test pipe the converter, leave the rest alone.

Mercedes exhausts aren't restrictive and an open exhaust on an N/A diesel won't gain any power, just get super loud.
